We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Noble Donovan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
When my daughter Raeagn was just four years old she got a rare infection that almost took her life and next thing we know, she had CDiff – something I hadn’t heard of but is very common spreading in hospitals and from heavy antibiotics. It took two years and over a hundred hospitalizations to stabilize my kiddo from the aftermath of heavy antibiotics and gut-destroying CDff. See Raegan has epilepsy and so we live in the world of co-existing conditions – all making her unique medical journey particularly difficult to navigate. When she was first intubated hours after she almost died in the ER, I went home determined to whip up something I could rub all over her since she wasn’t moving or eating. I wanted to use good fats, pink salt for minerals and texture and had to be gluten-free and no toxins- and bam- Classic Pink Salt was born.
Over the course of the following two years, I perfected the variations of Classic Pink Salt I used most often with Raegan- Turmeric, Peppermint & Aloe. No matter what was going on, I found benefit in having ways to address a broad range of health and beauty needs she had with simple, natural ingredients topically. Half the time Raegan was sick and wouldn’t eat or take anything by mouth- or it wasn’t allowed in the ER or ICU. Touching her was always allowed and I incorporated different things into using ANSHi like massage, acupressure, cranial sacral, all while bringing her fast relief for everything from headaches post-seizure to bloating and constipation.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Up until when Raegan got sick I had a pretty normal and amazing career in marketing in tech. Stepping away from full-time work was a decision I made before she was acutely sick and we found out Raegan had a genetic condition called Rett Syndrome. I knew immediately I wanted to dig in, self-treat, and maximize Raegan’s potential to thrive in every way possible. I was naturally inclined to be open to functional, plant-medicine and first began using Cannabis with Raegan at age 3 to help with symptoms related to her genetic condition. From there, understanding the role diet played in her health, keeping her active, all played key roles but took up a lot of my time and brainpower so work – even the little consulting I was doing-simply fell by the wayside once she got sick. Nothing else at that point mattered to me but her. I knew she was going to have a long and hard healing journey but I always believed she could and would get better. In focusing in on Raegan and her needs so much as a caregiver it opened me up to the creative problem solving and self-treatment education that led me to create ANSHI.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Staycation at the Del on Coronado ferry across to seaport village, bike to little Italy for dinner, and then back across!
Love the farmers markets in all the neighborhoods – ANSHI does a few and just love seeing the local vendors and businesses and communities come together!
