We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacklord Tomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacklord, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Honolulu, and discovered at an early age that I was a visual person because of growing up in a dynamic environment. I came to Los Angeles to study architecture and then onto industrial design. The urban architecture and landscape was so fascinating of Los Angeles because it was so different from Honolulu that I could not resist painting. One of my first paintings that I completed was a painting titled, “L.A. River,” a painting of the original 6th street bridge in Los Angeles before it’s demolition and reconstruction. I was encouraged to spend a great deal of time on that painting, which proved to be my breakthrough painting as far as style and application.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In addition to my studies in architecture and industrial design in Southern California, my years studying in South Eastern Spain, had a very profound effect on how I interpreted urban historic structures. My business started when I purchased an old school ledger book from Office Depot and went from there. I will never forget the first 5 sales. I was thrilled that people came to me that they wanted to purchase a painting they wanted to live with.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would like to show them a big cross section of Los Angeles, from the Descanso gardens in La Cañada to to the arts districts down town and the beautiful coastline from from Malibu to Ventura. I like downtown haunts like the Edison and Perch LA. I’ll make sure they’ll see the cities museums like the Huntington, The Getty Villa and the Hammer Museum of Art. And we can’t forget dinner at the Smokehouse in Burbank.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I acknowledge my very good late friend Kent Butler, a very well known artist in Ojai, California and his wonderful wife Sharon, also a very talented artist, have been very supportive as personal friends and professionals. I was very fortunate to have non artist art lovers like Kim Sloan of Santa Paula, California, who were by my side from the very beginning. They taught me about horses and I taught them about art.
