We had the good fortune of connecting with Ishita Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ishita, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
As an Indian- American immigrant, my upbringing has always been a mixed experience of both American and Indian culture. Though I moved to the United States when I was one, I spent 1/4 of my childhood in India, so I have always had to find a balance between the two different cultures and the assimilation process. Like many young children from a mixed cultural household you end up being two different (yet the same) people in and outside of the home.
Growing up in the South Bay I definitely faced challenges trying to balance both cultures but as I started to embrace both sides of who I was I used it as an opportunity to share both aspects of my life. The South Bay is very diverse, but in the schools which I went to, I was one of few Hindu/Indian Students. I always had trouble fitting fitting in, but once I started to be my whole self I started to find my confidence as an Indian-American. I would talk about Indian culture at school, wear fusion outfits, and happily bring my favorite Indian foods for lunch. Once I became confident and who I am that is when I finally found myself and the role I play in the community.
That trait carried on into College, my career, and to who I am now. It’s a constant journey to bring my full self forward and embrace who I am. The success of my business, the inspiration to my art, and my personal motivation are all a result of my upbringing as an Indian American women.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As someone who works in Tech during the day and then has a creative business at night, I definitely have to find balance in work. When it comes to my business, Rangeen, I currently manage most of my work in house. I’m not only the artist but I’m the CEO, CFO, CMO etc. Honestly, with how much I have on my plate, I’m most proud of the vision we have with Rangeen. We’ve become a platform that not only celebrates diversity but has become a platform and go to accessory for folx to feel seen/heard.
Working full-time in a fast paced industry and running a creative small business is not easy, but you manage! Time management and imposter syndrome end up being the biggest barriers. In a social media-driven world, you want to “keep up” with everyone, but understanding your barriers is essential. It took me a few months to get my bearings, but I have been able to manage my time and create a schedule which works for me and help me grow my business. Social media is also definitely an interesting barrier. With so much saturation, it’s hard to get your work to shine and imposter syndrome definitely takes over. Our personal mindset is usually our biggest barrier we need to get over and that just takes time and finding value in yourself!
When it comes to Rangeen and my story I want people to know we strive to find joy in the little moments and celebrate the little things that make us unique. Like you, our accessories are the same. They’re unique handcrafted pieces to celebrate the diversity and colors of our world while bridging the gap between South Asian and Western fashion to create the perfect fusion accessory.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man, though I don’t live in the City anymore, my favorite places to visit in the South Bay have to be centered around the beach and food! If you love brunch, you MUST go to The Pan in Gardena. It’s such a hidden gem with the best pancakes and loaded tater tots! I also recommend taking time to visit the different South Bay Beaches with a day long bike ride from Torrance to Manhattan Beach and then taking time to explore all the things to eat in the Manhattan Beach area. You can’t go wrong wherever you go! I also love the brewery scene in Torrance, especially The Dudes, Monkish, and Smog City all have a great selection and are all so unique from one another. I also am a huge fan of the Riviera in Redondo Beach- great shopping, views, drinks and eats and honestly a great summary of what South Bay living looks like. And lastly, I would definitely recommend all the hikes near Palos Verdes, Malibu, and if you have time Eaton Canyon.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t be where I am without my family and friends. I am blessed to have such a positive support network who constantly motivate me and help celebrate my wins.
