We had the good fortune of connecting with Hiro Tominaga and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hiro, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The initial idea was to get a small group of like-minded people together. Even though we’re like-minded, we all have different areas of expertise. I have a background in digital art. My partner has a background in web design. We also work with a graphic designer, my wife, and a communications expert, his wife.
While some of these skills can overlap, we work together better amplifying our strengths and assisting on our weaknesses.
For now I live in Japan. However the goal is to move all of JiwaJiwa’s operations to the U.S. by 2027.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While studying digital painting and creative pursuits, I discovered the beauty of art. It’s about bringing joy and inspiration to people with my works. The United States is where this dream can be recognized and realized. San Diego is my favorite place in the U.S., so we established the company there. I would like to live in the U.S. with my wife someday.
Our company can support business by using design and art to bring satisfaction and joy to our customers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Art: Balboa Park, however when it comes to that, I prefer to create rather than appreciate.

Places: I love nature, especially love Julian and Ocean Beach. And if I’m taking a road trip, then Sedona and the Grand Canyon are fantastic spots for a recharge.

Music: Casbah

Pizza: Either The Friendly or Luigis

Sushi: Soichi

Neighborhood: Golden Hill has a ton of unknown or underrated gems.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Raechel Kadoya – She started Soichi Sushi with her husband. They hired a friend of mine to paint a mural on the side of the building. He brought me along to help out. While there, I struck up a conversation with her and her husband.

From there it grew into me gifting them a digital version of a picture the Kensington News Site took for the opening. It features Soichi looking focused while holding a yet-unsliced golden eye snapper. Great photo. And he still has the recreation I did hanging on the wall behind him. After that they began merchandising with my creation.

From there, my partner and I asked Raechel for help in establishing our own business since we did not know where to start. She graciously acknowledged and now here we are just starting out but know we can make a positive impact with such a solid basis.
