We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think success in business comes down to providing a service or an answer to a customers issue. Whether that issue is something important and complicated or as simple as wanting to look good and save a little money. Color Street is a simple and inexpensive option to pretty nails. It may seem shallow or vane but having a nice manicure makes women feel put together even if they’re a “hot mess momma”. Life is hard and especially crazy right now. Something simple and effortless is an awesome option. As far as me and my branding, I’ve learned that really being just me is the best way to go. Trying to fill an image that you think is good for business, but isn’t who you really are, is exhausting and phony. That’s not fair to your customers.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Joining Color Street was taking a chance. I’m a Founding Stylist, meaning I joined on the faith in a product before we even launched the company. Being a startup company definitely has ups and downs. Through all of the last three years, including quarantine, I have never wavered in my confidence in CS. Surprisingly, I have made the best and closest friendships in the last three years. Mostly with women I may only see once or twice a year. I’ve learned to trust these women in business and in life. It sounds very “drank the Kool-Aid” but it’s just such an amazing group of women. I started Color Street at a point I was looking for “me” again. I’m the mom of 20 year old triplets and four older step-kids. My husband is a retired firefighter/paramedic. I, like lots of women, get lost under the Mom/Wife title. I got to remember who I was.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I grew up at the beach so that would be my first stop. I could sit for hours just watching and listening to the waves. San Diego has SO much. Something for every age. How can you not hit the World Famous San Diego Zoo? Or the Wild Animal Park. Yes, I’m that old and that’s what I will always call it. The entire coastline is gorgeous. How fun is it to board the USS Midway or roam around Balboa Park? Hiking trails are everywhere. I still haven’t made it to potato chip rock. I really love the influx over the years of all the small coffee places and breweries. Kid friendly, dog friendly places to grab a beer is so common in other countries, why did it take us so long? It’s family oriented and that’s a good thing. Food in San Diego is phenomenal. I doubt there is a food you can’t get here. Of course it’s the best place for Mexican food. Again the family owned taco shops are so fun to find. I’m Southern California born and raised so I try not to take for granted how beautiful this area is.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m actually going to shout out the creator of Color Street. Fa Park is the American Dream. He came here in the 1980’s from Korea to be an opera singer! He was in a bus watching a woman in a cab trying to paint her nails the traditional way. His thought, “There has to be a better way”. Thirty years later, there is. Nail strips moved from retail to MLM in 2017. Mr Park’s dream gave thousands of mostly women their own businesses and more options in their personal lives. His love of the USA kept all production here at home. During quarantine through warehouse modifications, we are all still working. His morals and standards are high and his support of the people in his company makes it easy to be proud of being part of the CS family. And we were just named the #1 Nail Polish Company in the country!!! That’s over all traditional polishes
