Meet Hayley Shires | Co-Owner; Pizza Maker; Customer Service, Social Media, & Events Manager; Wife & Mom

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hayley Shires and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hayley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Cody had been working in construction ever since graduating college, and we both knew this wasn’t what he had wanted to do for the rest of his life. Our neighbors had presented us with the business opportunity to be co-owners of a food truck and it was kind of a no-brainer. We had just had our first daughter a few months prior starting the business, and this would mean we would be able to create our own schedule and spend more time together as a family. That’s exactly what has happened too! We’re now a family of four working in the trolley at least four times a week at events here in Ramona, CA.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ironically, Cody’s first job in high school was at a pizza shop in Harrisburg, IL. You’ll occasionally see us rotating in some of his favorites from that restaurant on our menu. After college, Cody worked in construction as a commercial diver, welder and pile driver. The construction world is rough on so many aspects of your life, so we always knew that he wasn’t going to spend his entire career doing that. Don’t get me wrong the food truck life can be exhausting in many ways, but I often ask him if he’s glad he’s doing this instead of construction, and it’s never even a question.
I currently work remotely full-time in finance for a non-profit in La Jolla, who I have been with for 8.5 years. Prior to that I worked for KPBS, where I managed grants, coordinated events and ran a few of their social media accounts. Both of those jobs have definitely helped me in my current role with our business whether it be managing our finances, running our Instagram/Facebook account or coordinating catering and event requests. I don’t think I quite knew what owning a small business was going to require of my time or skills, but I think I have always been used to wearing multiple hats and juggling multiple tasks at the same time, so I think that skill has benefitted me a lot in running the pizza trolley.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ramona is a smaller, quieter town in San Diego county, but there’s still plenty to do and see up here! When the weather is cooler, there are a lot of great hikes in the area. Mount Woodson’s famous Potato Chip Rock hike is a popular, must-do. We have great coffee shops in town like Rise + Shine Cafe and Cattle Dog Coffee Co. If you’re looking to have a drink and watch some sports, Reds Whites & Brews is a great indoor/outdoor bar. There are a ton of antique stores along Main St., but if you’re in the mood to shop, we also have some very cute boutiques in the area, Rusted Poppy and Uptown Boutique to name a couple. A few of our favorite restaurants to eat at when we’re not eating our own pizza, would be Marinade on Main or Par Lounge in the SD Country Estates.
Many people have been to Ramona without even realizing it as they head up to Julian, for some fresh pie or cooler weather. There are lots of great places to eat, drink, and shop up in Wynola and Julian.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our friends, neighbors & business partners, Steve & Chelsea Schoeni have and are currently running several small businesses up here in Ramona. They are the ones who gave us this opportunity to start a small business with them, so we just want them to know how grateful we are for them!
