We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Hannah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“The more I paint, the more I like everything…”

-Jean-Michel Basquiat

I think we all have a choice in terms of perspective. I have experienced quite a lot of darkness in my life, and I have been gifted an opportunity to come out of this, to see light, instead. My intentional use of bright colors and bold paint strokes, as well as my incorporation of depth makes me like everything a bit more.

I also believe that I can, as the artist, have a sense of agency. through my creative work. The world can seem daunting at times, but I get to express some form of control by determining my next creative action.

Art is a call to action at the end of the day. At least from my lens.

Nearly four years ago. I had gotten sober and clean and needed to do something with my fidgety hands. I had always wanted to be an artist but I never thought I was one. I suppose I knew I was on some level, you know, how children know all but then somehow forget along the way. I was watching tv and took out a pencil and a pad of paper. Low and behold, my hand started moving as if on its own, and the rest is history.

There I was, an artist, remembering finally my creative calling. I really felt called to action, to create as much as possible as quickly as possible. There was this sort of maniacal imbalance that became, as if out of nowhere. It was as if, because I had stalled on realizing I was an artist for whatever reason, I had to make up those lost thirty-some-odd years.

I see now that this isn’t true, but it’s certainly what I believed at the time. Short story long, I then started my own business, Art by Hannah Hannah, and it sort of just took off. Well, a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes, but it’s amazing how once I decided to become an artist, the Universe sort of just took off with it and paved a way.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was virtually alone for three years. Sure, my fur babies kept me company, but that’s about it. I also had two major, life altering surgeries during this time. Art saved my life, truly, it did. I then began painting apparel, as I had run out of canvases. I decided to only ever paint one-of-a-kind, upcycled pieces. I went through purses, jackets, pants, shoes and more! I now have a booming fashion business where I participate in all kinds of wonderful fashion shows, such as New York Fashion Week!
