We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Stone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greg, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
In the content creation world, there are a lot of ways to fail and even more ways to succeed thankfully. Over the course of the last few years, i’ve learned a few things that help navigate the ups and downs of social media.
First and foremost, leading with genuine kindness and curiosity will go a LONG way. Treating every person as an individual who deserves respect will help build positive reputation in your community in person and online.
Secondly, a habit i struggle with every day but know is crucial to success is this: Behave like a goldfish. There are a lot of ways to get run down by underperforming content, stressing out over negative comments or people. But the thing I learned early on is forget about it, keep your head down, and keep moving.
Lastly, always reevaluating my goals helps shape my action plan for the future. If you have no destination in mind, whatever that looks like to you, you cant possibly make informed decisions on how to push forward towards your goals.
Lots of other habits that help but these are the ones I found i lean on the most.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well. I wouldn’t say being a creative has been what keeps the lights on but i’ve sure spent a great amount of time doing it over the last decade! One of my other passions has been music. I’m a drummer by trade but play many other instruments. At my home, I’m lucky enough to have a fairly put together recording studio where I have done session work, recorded social media content and videos, etc.
It’s never considered work if you enjoy what you’re doing right? So I’ve been able to craft my successes over the years in a way that i want. Doing things such as session work, drum tech’ing for Conan O’Brien, playing in dozens of churches, and playing countless shows (seriously in the hundreds) all have their unique set of challenges. resilience, tenacity, and an honest desire to put your best foot forward have really helped guide me while navigating all of these things. If i could tell anyone how to succeed doing something you love, it would be those 3 things!
In regards to Backswing Banter and golf, It’s been such an amazing thing becoming a student of the game. Backswing Banter is my way of documenting a journey that is not unfamiliar to the majority of golfers and providing value for anyone who lends me their attention. I’ve only just begun to grow a community and its been so rewarding!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is hard! So many good spots in San Diego. Im a music junkie, so i attend a lot of shows. The Observatory in North Park has a ton of great shows. The food in North Park is SPECTACULAR, especially if you like tacos!
If they’re wanting to relax, endless beach time never hurt anyone 😀 I’m in North County, so walking around Downtown Carlsbad is relaxing and you couldn’t ask for a better backdrop. I’m not a huge drinker but the wine bar Vin De Syrah has a pretty fun entryway and hanging out at Pizza Port with the locals always proves to be a good time.
Of course, If its one of my friends, they’d most likely golf, so going to Courses such as Coronado Municipal Golf Course, Torrey Pines, and some other beautiful courses would definitely be on the list.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to first thank my wife and kids for putting up with this crazy golf obsession. It’s not always easy but they are rockstars through and through!
I would also like to thank the following friends for helping stir my passion for golf and its surrounding areas: Noly Tengonciang, Alex Callewaert, Josh Jess, Collin Adler, Robbie Conrad, the 4K Creator Group in IG, Nate Hryn, and so many others.
