We had the good fortune of connecting with Frank Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frank, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I honestly just felt that I had something for someone out there that they had not seen. I wanted to make that for them and it isn’t a monetary thing but for someone to recognize your value has meant a lot.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my art, I feel it coveys a message in it that everyone can relate to. A message that some may be reluctant to express and that is something that I believe drives me to continue to create. I understand that it may not be for everyone, but as long as it speaks to people I will continue to explore more ways to shoot what I shoot. As far as setting myself apart from others, well that is something I try not to dwell on too much. I go by feel and though there are so many people and other things that inspire me on a daily, I trust my instincts and let that lead me to the next project. The thing I am the most proud of is the the fact that I have the opportunity to show my clients a side of themselves that they had not seen. It is always rewarding when they are amazed by the way they look in their portraits. The look in their faces always brings a smile to my heart and reminds me of why I keep doing this. I got to where I am today by putting in the work. As cliché as that may sound, I find it to be true and anyone in any profession can attest to that. The reward and price or end goal will always come as long as you put the work in. I don’t believe it was ever easy nor will it continue to be however, when you find a passion for something like I have with photography, it really isn’t hard. The most important lesson I learned along the way was to be myself. To create what I felt was what I wanted to. Believing in what I had to offer as a photographer, from the vision to the editing, I had to trust myself so that others could believe in it as well. What I would like the world to know about what I do, is that no matter the situation, you can always make something from what is truly inside you. Whether it’s a feeling or a thought, happiness or grief, you can take all those things and envision something that will allow you to express it any way possible. That’s what I have done and I look forward to growing as an artist for as long as I’m able to.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first thing I would do is explore the outdoors. Hiking Mission Trails has always been one of my favorite things to do in San Diego. If it were a week long trip, I would definitely knock out the 5 Peak Challenge! Another one of my favorite places to see is Sunset Cliffs because of the diversity in its scenery, both low tide and high tide. North Park would be the ideal place to check out a few different restaurants and breweries. South park has their fair share of local eateries and stores. Of course, there is Balboa Park which offers so much culture, from museums to local artist and gardens. All in all, I don’t think a week would suffice in order to truly appreciate San Diego for what it really is. I mean, the weather alone would attract anyone to this special place in Southern California

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For this particular part, I would like to shout out the photographer who has always been an inspiration to me. He goes by Moss and I had the privilege of meeting him and actually shooting another model together. He is a very humble person and super approachable. I remember reaching out to him for advice and he was never hesitant to help. He is a truly genuine person and still one of the greatest artist I’ve met.
