We had the good fortune of connecting with Felix El Gato and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Felix, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is a very fickle thing. I like gambling, but I hate gambling. It’s obvious that it can be very rewarding, or it can carry its own field of negative consequences. But I feel that without taking risks, there would be no progression. If you were to never leave your comfort zone, you would plateau and stay in the same place in life, business, relationships, etc… Some of the best and worst risks I have taken have all gave me something. Whether that was a financial gain, a new resource or relationship, or even a new lesson, risk has played a pivotal role in my growth.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Building a business around music has been a very tough road to travel. I have always known that to “make it big” is a lottery win. 1 in a million will hit the “big time”. But I’ve realized that I can be successful on my own path and in my own paved road. I currently run a highly in demand band for performances, a merchandise store that makes about $1000 every 2-3 weeks, and have royalties coming in from synch placing and online music streams. I don’t have the numbers that the radio guys have, but I am most proud of my own growth and my own found “wealth”. I’ve learned that you can not copy the ways of any other person in this world. You start to realize that natural, original hard work pays off quicker than stealing formulas from others you see. Once your originality starts to shine, not just in the creative aspect, you will quickly see the exponential climb of “your” success in the right way. When you have something special to offer the world, they will find it and cherish it, whether it comes in the first year of your career or in the 10th year. SM Familia entertainment offers things that many of the other competition can’t. I saw a growing need for latin entertainment years ago, which I took serious and infused what we do with more of my latin culture, which for our music, videos, and content, keeps us in demand now and what looks to be the foreseeable future.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you come to my beatiful hometown of San Diego, there would be so much for us to do! First thing on the list would be to grab tickets to a Padres baseball game. Padres play at Petco Park, which is the number 1 rated ballpark in all the nation for its beauty and bountiful food and craft beers.
On a calm, hot weekday, we would visit the shores of Del Mar, Carlsbad, or Pacific Beach. With some of the best surf, it’s a must to rent some boards and the waters of San Diego.
Of course, everyday will be full of good eating! From our famous Mira Mesa area full of Korean BBQ spots, ramen and many other choices, to La Jollas finest steakhouses. We could always hit the lat night munchies and go down south of the border a little and eat some of the best tacos ever!
And we can end off the trip with a quiet picnic or BBQ at some of the beautiful trails and parks to catch San Diego’s signature sunsets.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I feel that being in the music industry, there is a whole long list of people that have helped me and deserve recognition. In reality, I have to thank my music teachers along my way to where i’m at now. They really gave me a sense of bringing out my true love and passion for music and anything related to the field. Without that discipline early in my life, I wouldn’t have the patience and will to continue working in a field that is very tough to crack open even a slight sliver of success. And as far as my place in business, I have to thank my small circle of friends who always motivate me to keep progressing and keep taking big leaps of faith.
