We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Painter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been an esthetician since 2007. It has always been on my mind to start my own business. Ownership can be scary and expensive, so it was always difficult for me to take that leap. I worked in a spa for a long time that abruptly shut down; So I ended up at another place that I just didn’t feel was the right fit. After nearly a year of working at this place, I realized that I was essentially giving the business owners half my income to work on clients that were only there because of me in the first place.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve been a licensed esthetician since 2007. I opened Esthetics By Erin in January 2020. Who could have known a deadly pandemic was lurking around the corner? Due to the infancy of my business, I was not able to qualify for any sort of small business assistance. This forced me to really think “Is this what I want to do? Did I make the right decision?” The answer was a resounding YES! I am passionate about my work. I absolutely love what I do. I’m good at my job and I love my guests. I have developed relationships with them over the years, finally get to see them on a regular basis again and I am hoping to develop more business relationships in the future. I do a variety of esthetics services including facials, speed waxing (with a specialty in Brows and Brazilians) chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A few of my favorite restaurants are Mitch’s Seafood in Point Loma; Tajima Ramen (the spicy sesame is the best) and Mignon on Convoy. A few of my favorite hikes are the lnaja Trail in Santa Isabel; Green Valley Falls in Descanso and La Jolla Heights Open Space Natural Park (you get an amazing view of the SD shore line from here.) Balboa Park is a must see. While the zoo is cool, I’d spend time exploring the park and take a drive up to the SD Zoo Safari Park in Escondido! Well worth it!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to thank fellow esthetician, Savannah White for asking not once but twice if I wanted to share a studio space. I’m so glad she urged me in the right direction! Even with COVID19 and all the shutdowns, my only regret about starting my own business is that I didn’t do it sooner!
