We had the good fortune of connecting with Endrea Kosven and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Endrea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial bent, since my father and grandfather had run a successful auto repair and wholesale parts business in Los Angeles, so I always felt that eventually I would have my own business. Also having a strong creative side inherited from my mother, I had felt confined by the limitations of working in the corporate environment, so I decided one day to quit my job and start my own shop!

I launched EDK on wing and a prayer. I had NO financial backing getting started – I did this completely from scratch. I began seeking freelance gigs on sites like Guru, and my business took off. The idea of having a business where I could create jobs for others and be a self-starter was really invigorating and motivating for me. Why wouldn’t I want to do something where I could actually make a bigger difference in this world, rather than toil in a corporate job that provided no real opportunities for any growth or impact?

What should our readers know about your business?
I have been running my own agency since 2009. After working as a junior publicist with the Los Angeles Dodgers, I started working at leading worldwide PR firm Edelman Public Relations, working on major accounts such as ABSOLUT Vodka, Nissan North America, and DreamWorks SKG. I then began working at several corporate sales jobs, including a five-year stint with a large uniform company.

There’s always obstacles when running your own business. I think it was the transition from having a regular paycheck from a corporate job to having to generate new business and make things happen for yourself that was the biggest challenge.

I gained a lot of confidence from being in a corporate sales role, having to achieve sales goals every month. You become mentally tough to get through those first few years. I knew I had something special to offer my clients with EDK, and that motivated me to push through and keep growing. The fact I could start something from scratch was so exciting!

I use this as a driver to help my clients grow and succeed in their own branding and marketing efforts. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and that’s especially important to keep in mind for business owners who are just getting started with their brand!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow, there’s a lot of neat places here! I love being outdoors and am a big beach person, so I would definitely go to all the coastal spots, probably starting in Malibu heading north on PCH. I lived in Ventura for a few years so the beaches there are some of my favorites — Silver Strand, Surfer’s Knoll, and even further north up to Carpinteria.

I’m also vegan and a big foodie, so anywhere I can grab some good plant-based eats would be awesome! There are some great places around the city to enjoy some delicious grub, such as Gracias Madre, Sage Bistro, and Follow Your Heart in the Los Angeles area.

There are also some amazing museums around town, such as the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My team at EDK and Company! It’s their positive and winning attitude, along with the creativity and knowledge they bring that makes this dream of having my own company come true.
