We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Rae and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Being born and raised in San Diego has had quite the impact on who I am today, and as I have gotten older, the more I have realized such. For quite some time, I actually thought that I would permanently move out of San Diego and experience a new city (or state!) altogether. However, after traveling outside of San Diego, I truly realized the beauty of America’s finest city that, quite frankly, I had taken for granted during my youth.
Having the beach 30 minutes away, downtown 30 minutes the other way, snowy mountains in the winter 2 hours away and so much more, I believe that living in a city like San Diego has released a certain spontaneity within. Once my fiancé moved here, I also got to see this city through his lens which honestly made me fall in love with this place all over again! Not only are there endless activities to do and locations to explore, but this is a place that is so close to my heart because of the people that reside here. My fiancé, best friends and family all make this city that much more beautiful and truly gives me every reason to stay in San Diego forever. Not to mention, the opportunities I have had here have shaped me immensely. This is where I began the journey to earning my degree in Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing from FIDM, where I held my first jobs and internships and where I came out of my shell and realized the power of networking. Needless to say, San Diego will always be home for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic form is truly through content creation in the beauty and fashion realms. I am an old soul at heart and my style and creative accounts certainly show just that. Taking inspiration from the movies, fashion, art and music from decades such as the 1940s and 1950s, I believe, sets my style apart from others. Vintage edits, especially video edits as of late, are a major passion of mine. Piecing together outfits and creating lookbook-style videos bring me immense joy. Recently, my fiancé and I prepped and styled our engagement shoot to be inspired by the 1940s-set film, The Notebook, and it was one of the best decisions we could have made for this time in our life! (Check it out on my TikTok if you want to see how I created the iconic blue Allie Hamilton dress!).
I am most excited for this next chapter coming up. I have so many plans for this new account and hope to really use it to house my greatest creative passions. I am proud of this as well as it is fully and authentically me. This is what I love to do and have a true zeal for and what I will continue to do in the future during my off time. Although it hasn’t been an easy road, and I am sure, will not be an easy one going forward either, it has been one that I have thoroughly enjoyed taking.
My style is also constantly changing which can make it a challenge when it comes to the content I enjoy creating. If there’s one thing I have learned though, it is that that is perfectly okay. We are not meant to stay in the same box our entire lives and as we get older, things are going to change. So long as you embrace it and are able to incorporate these changes into your creative field, I have learned, all will be okay. Truthfully, like everyone else, I am trying to navigate thru life just as the next person: taking it day by day. Nonetheless, I am excited to see where this next chapter goes and the opportunities that lie ahead!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is perfect timing as my fiancé and I are currently creating an itinerary for when his mom and sister come out to San Diego! First and foremost, exploring all of the beaches San Diego has to offer is a must! From La Jolla to Torrey Pines and everything in between, San Diego has some of the most scenic beaches I have ever experienced.
As far as dining goes, I would most definitely take them over to Portside Pier for a lovely dinner overlooking the water. We always have a great experience at Ketch but any of the restaurants over there are delightful. Breakfast at Shorehouse Kitchen, just a few blocks from La Jolla Shores, is a no-brainer and biking around the Coronado island would be the perfect afternoon occasion. The nightlife in Downtown San Diego is a great time, as well! For scenic views of the entire skyline, Altitude Sky Lounge holds a special place in my heart. It’s also always a blast at Moonshine Flats where they have dancing, ping pong (if you know me well, you know I take this very seriously!), and great music.
While there are always the tourist attractions like Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park, simply taking the ferry from one edge of the water to the next is a sight that won’t be soon forgotten.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my Shoutout to my fiancé, Justin. He has always pushed me to work on the creative projects that I am so passionate about and has helped to re-spark my inspiration for my @alovelyday.emilyrae account (which is in the works right now and I cannot wait to share!). Justin is also the man behind the camera for nearly all of the content I create and publish! I feel very blessed that I get to have a life partner that is so caring, encouraging and comforting like Justin on this crazy journey with me. It truly makes the entire adventure worthwhile.
My close family and best friends have also been there every step of the way. Whether it’s been photoshoot days with my best friends, or the endless pep talks given by my mom, having loved ones that acknowledge, praise and support the work you do truly keeps you going at the end of the day.
