We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominic Mineo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominic, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
This is a polarizing topic! Everyone seeks balance. But do they? What do you want? Does my career and lifestyle allow balance? These are some of the quandaries I ponder often along with many others lol. Balance is subjective. I think we all seek balance to keep life fresh but to also continue a consistent routine. It’s a bit of “this and that” if that makes sense. People like variety which is what balance is. I am a lucky man to have created a business and brand in my line of passion. However since I work for myself I don’t have much balance on a regular basis. Which is my trade off and sacrifice for living my passion work. I find happiness in the process of growing my buisiness. I find happiness in being healthy, fit, exercising and practicing what I preach. I experience happiness when students and clients express gratitude toward my teachings and voice their level of happiness + growth from my program. My clients, students and fellow working companions are the ones that fuel my fire. Without them none of this is possible. Because of all these awesome aspects to my brand and business I don’t experience much balance mentally or physically. Which is ok with me. I know that in order for me to be at my best I need to be 100% commited to my team, clients and course program.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want to put a YogiStick in every persons hands in the world! I want there to be a YogiStick in every home across the globe. Why? Because stretching with the YogiStick is essential business lol. Seriously! There is instant body gratification when stretching with it. We carry stress, emotional baggage and built up scar tissue in our neck, shoulders, back and hips. Stretching with a YogiStick targets these areas naturally in use and for just a few minutes can absolutely change your mood, appreciation for your body and an immediate feel for wanting to be more physically healthy. I can talk about this all day! Lol. But until you stretch with it you won’t understand. I have published 2 books on Dhurva in which I use for Teacher Trainings and offer to practioners wishing to learn body self care using the YogiStick. The first is a pose book containing just over 285 poses. This book is similar to a dictionary. Poses are listed from A-Z and almost every way possible to use the YogiStick in a single move. The second is a sequence book with 75 pose matching sequences created specifically to learn how to string poses together for an at home workout or the ability to teach a class. Everytime I have made an advancement in this creative style of fitness I have guaranteed more future work for myself lol. Which is a good problem and something I am grateful for. But this style of exercise, yoga and fitness will not grow on it’s own. So naturally it is not easy. I have also learned that writing and publishing a book is extremely tedious, time consuming and has has a feel of it being a never ending process lol! I am glad I did it. It was a must for Dhurva to be where it is now.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is the best! I have lived here since 2004 and have lived downtown the past 7 years. We would start by going to a Padres game without question. Then to Meze grill in the Gaslamp after for dinner. Then we would hit the links at Torrey Pines golf course the next day. After the round head to tower 23 in pacific beach for a bite then walk the beach and to watch the sunset. Do I sound like an SD pro yet lol?! Next we would brunch at Hotel Del then go for a bike ride down the strand and back to Coronado. On another day go for a bike ride to balboa park and ride down to little italy for coffee, lunch or dinner. Or all 3! I could hangout in little italy all day everyday. Depending on the friend, next we would cross the border! Rosarito and valle de guadalupe are the spots to be south of the border. Fresh lobster and one of the finest wine valleys in the world.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank every person that has ever believed in me and that expressed this in action with their time, energy, finances, patience, kindness and love. I want to thank Connie Cook my all time favorite fitness director whom gave me the chance to debut Dhurva at her 5 stellar fitness facilities. I want to thank Stephania Ochs for keeping my head straight and continuing to keep me motivated in all the right ways when things were hard. I want to thank John Ramistella for pushing me to remember that money is real and to keep hustling and fight to achieve my goals on a daily basis. I want to thank Daniel Mercurio for continuing to make me think about my future and the need to plan for my future life. I want to thank every Dhurva teacher and model that I have worked with along the way. Without you this would not be! I am grateful for all of you! You are the embodiment of Dhurva just as much as I.
