We had the good fortune of connecting with Diane Mandle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diane, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Life is full of challenges and with each challenge there is some amount of risk. I have always thought about risk being a challenge to reflect on what is important and true for me and how my taking the risk might affect others. Sometimes the risk is only personal: Shall I try a new food that looks weird? Sometimes it might affect others: Shall I move to California despite the wishes of my family? So each level of risk requires introspection. Risk is the opportunity for me to feel my own limitations and decide to push the boundaries or not. When I take the risk it means that I walk with some amount of fear or anxiety. That is something I call courage. Usually it strengthens me and inspires others. If the risk resulted in something negative, then I have learned something too- for the next time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been working with the Tibetan sacred sound instruments since 2000 when I moved to California from the east coast. At that time hardly anyone knew about them. I was fortunate to have a Tibetan buddhist teacher who I worked with for 2-1/2 years before moving out and starting a practice and eventually a school. I also had the opportunity to travel to Nepal and India to better understand the buddhist principles and the cultures from which the instruments originated. It is with deep respect that my offerings and the education I give my students are inclusive of Tibetan buddhist teachings as well as an effective structure to work within. As a single mother of two sons, the journey was not an easy one. I had to work full time, while caring for my children and educating myself about the modality. It required hours of practice. When I relocated to California where I didn’t know a single person, I had no idea how I would earn a living while building a practice. Piecing together enough to pay rent and eat I integrated into the community and slowly built a practice. In 2008 I opened the Tibetan Bowl Sound Healing School to raise the bar and establish a high standard of practice for this modality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My friend would certainly enjoy hiking at Torrey Pines and Elfin Forest as well as a stroll through the Meditation Gardens in Encinitas. We would spend time on the beach at Beacons and walk to Moonlignt. We would bike down 101 through Cedros and take the coaster downtown to pedal around Seaport Village visiting the tall ships there. We would go to Balboa park making a stop at the photography museum there. Maybe we would rent a kayak and take in a concert at Humphries in the San Diego bay as boat people! Every visitor loves Mexican food so I would take her to City Tacos on 101 in Encinitas. No trip here would be complete without a visit to the Leucadia farmers market for a delicious lunch at one of the food stalls there. One early morning we would drive to the Getty Center or the Broad Museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My French maternal grandmother who passed at age 101 was a supreme mentor who demonstrated kindness, courage, creativity, generosity and fun. My children taught me unconditional love, All the challenges in my life taught me resilience. My travels expanded my awareness and perspective. My students and clients honor me with their trust. My friends and life partner keeps encouraging and supporting me. All this contributes to where I am in life today.
