Meet David Reis | Program Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with David Reis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When we started San Diego Climbing Academy (SDCA), our motivation was pretty straightforward: we wanted more control over our own path. We liked the idea of taking risks on our own terms and not being limited by someone else’s approach. With a clear idea of what a youth climbing team could really become, we knew we needed full freedom to build everything exactly the way we envisioned—from coaching methods to team culture.
At SDCA, climbing isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about developing resilience, creativity, and mastery. Having our own academy meant we could put our beliefs into practice. Our main goal was always bigger than climbing; we wanted to help young athletes become adaptable, confident, and prepared for whatever challenges life throws their way.
Starting SDCA has been an exciting adventure and a way to make a meaningful impact on our community. It felt like the right thing to do, and we’ve loved every part of the challenge of turning our passion into a thriving, purpose-driven business.

What should our readers know about your business?
San Diego Climbing Academy (SDCA) is a youth and adult climbing training program that prioritizes a skill-first, holistic approach. What sets us apart is that we’re just as committed to personal growth and learning as our athletes. Everything we ask our climbers to do in their development, we actively practice ourselves. This mutual journey and clear upward aim distinguish us from other programs that may lack a defined coaching path. We believe climbing isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about developing adaptable, confident individuals ready to handle challenges both on and off the wall.
We’re especially proud of the community we’ve built; one where climbers not only grow as athletes but also as well-rounded people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love going to the beach, Prager Brothers ,and the climbing gym. We also love hitting up a local outdoor climbing area called Mt. Woodson.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We definitely want to dedicate our shoutout to the C5 Climbing Team, and specifically to Alvaro Rangel. Alvaro was instrumental in shaping us as coaches; helping us develop a deep passion for learning. His mentorship laid the essential foundation that allowed us to confidently build SDCA. We’re genuinely grateful for his guidance and support along the way.
