We had the good fortune of connecting with David Mastikosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose an artistic path because it resonates with me—as a force that shapes society, sparks dialogue, and bridges cultural boundaries. Music is more than sound; it is a medium of discovery, innovation, and connection. Through writing music, I explore and seek to expand the language of contemporary classical music, while my work in cultural management and education ensures its vitality and broader reach.

Art is essential to society’s evolution, and artists are responsible for fostering creativity, inclusion, and meaningful exchange. This belief drives my work—not only in composing new music but also in initiating innovative projects, supporting emerging talents, and contributing to the international artistic landscape. Founding the Art Lab music agency, writing and bringing to the stage the first chamber opera in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and dedicating myself to education are some of the integral parts of this vision.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artistic journey is rooted in a deep passion for contemporary classical music and an unwavering commitment to innovation in the arts. One of the achievements I am most proud of is founding “Art Lab”, the first agency for classical music in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through this initiative, I have successfully launched numerous creative projects, facilitated international collaborations, and brought contemporary music closer to the public. The production of my chamber opera “Cherry With a Gold Pit” stands out as a milestone, as it engaged over 40 professionals in Banja Luka and received critical acclaim, a full house, and standing ovations.

Getting to where I am today was not easy. Navigating the classical music industry, especially in a region where contemporary music is still developing, required perseverance, adaptability, and strategic thinking. Challenges such as limited funding, lack of infrastructure, and the need to build audiences for new music pushed me to develop skills beyond music composition—such as cultural management, networking, and leadership. Overcoming these obstacles involved constant learning, international collaborations, and a strong belief in my artistic vision.

In addition to my work as a composer and cultural entrepreneur, I am an Assistant Professor of Music Composition at the Academy of Arts, University of Banja Luka, where I have been teaching and mentoring young talent for nearly a decade. I have also been invited to share my expertise with composition students at institutions such as the Tartini Conservatory in Trieste, Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH) and LUCA School of Arts, KU Leuven.

My music is exclusively published by Donemus (Netherlands) and is widely recognized. My works have been performed by renowned ensembles such as the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Ensemble Metamorphosis, Zagreb Soloists, and Duo Knarborg/Andersen, among others. They have also been featured, commissioned, and performed at prestigious festivals worldwide, including Music Biennale Zagreb (Croatia), AlbaNova (Belgium), CEME (Israel), the 32nd International Review of Composers (Serbia), and Internațional de Muzică Nouă Intrada (Romania).

One of the defining moments of my career was the release of my debut album, “Escape”, which is the first contemporary classical music album from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Produced by Parma Recordings and released under Ravello Records (USA), this project marked a significant step in bringing my work to a global audience.

Looking ahead, I aim to further expand my work internationally, foster new artistic collaborations, and continue shaping the future of contemporary music through both composition and mentorship.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A getaway to Brvnaria Slatina, a beautiful and romantic wooden house, would undoubtedly be the highlight of any trip. Located in the serene Banja Slatina (Slatina Spa Complex), just 15 minutes away from Banjaluka, this place offers the perfect balance between tranquility and accessibility. My wife and I started this business a few years ago, and it holds a special place in my heart. Surrounded by breath-taking nature, it provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The interior and exterior design reflect our relationship, with every detail carefully and delicately chosen—creating a personal paradise we are proud to share with others. Nestled in the heart of the forest, this log cabin leaves everyone who visits in awe. When our friends visit, we savor the fresh air, enjoy homemade meals prepared with love, and spend cozy evenings by the fire, sharing stories under the stars. It is the perfect way to connect with nature and each other, creating unforgettable memories.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Success is never a solo journey, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who believes in my artistic vision, performs my music, and supports me every step of the way. From mentors and colleagues to audiences and fellow artists, every note I write is shaped by the people who inspire, challenge, and encourage me. Their trust and dedication give my work meaning and push me to keep exploring new creative possibilities. To all of them—thank you.
