We had the good fortune of connecting with David Conover and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Niavete. Impulsively. And with Vietnamese iced-coffee coursing through our bloodstream. Celia and I — young and newly married — decided we’d enjoy having our own Graphic Design business with another designer. Celia convinced a respected client to take the risk with us. They had been a client at the firm she was currently working at. We knew little about negotiating leases and establishing financial credit. We did know how to design.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
StudioConover is an odd marriage so-to-speak. We’re both Graphic / Marketing Designers and Exterior Designers. People know what graphic design is. When asked, I say exterior design is similar to interior design — but for the outside of buildings. There’s not a lot of people doing this. It is confusing when presented, but Celia and I are married to each other and to the business — no sense changing it now.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s a spot I affectionately call “lack-of-pride” rock. My fictive name. It’s an overlook after (close to) one hundred stair steps up to the precipice of South Fortuna that has a panorama of Mission Trail Regional Park and east. Sunrise is the serene moment to pause and reflect.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I mentioned the company we “landed” when we started. Without Bill Davidson’s trust, we wouldn’t have had the kickstart to begin with. Davidson Communities is an award-winning home builder and StudioConover is grateful to say we remain connected some 35 years later. There are numerous people, companies and coworkers that have trusted us to do the work we do for them. I would be doing a disservice to name only a few and since we’ve been in business for 35+ years the list would be really long!
