We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, starting my own business in Real Estate was a no brainer for me. I come from a background in Property Management and I always wanted more for myself and family. I wanted to build something that would create generational wealth. I am originally from the east coast, Baltimore to be exact. So when I first moved to San Diego 7 years ago, I wasn’t aware that you need a licensed to work in Property Management. They do not require that back east, so I had to take a quick job in Security to support my family. I made a plan to get my Real Estate License that included an extensive study plan, financial planning and brokerage research. This business is not for the faint of heart, so I knew I had to put the work in to make sure my plan was solid. When I passed the state exam on my first try, I knew all my hard work paid off and the lord had answered my prayers.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When you first start out in Real Estate it is not easy at all. It’s actually a bit scary because overall it’s a sales job and I have never been good at sales. I know that sounds crazy because I worked in Property Management on the east coast for over 10 years. At the end of the day I am NEVER a salesperson! I am always a consultant! I have a passion for helping others and that is how I approach my business. I am never going to pressure someone but yet educate them so they can understand how the home-buying or selling process works, their legal rights and a game plan going forward. What sets me apart from others is that I am too legit to quit! Hahaha! Seriously, if there is a problem then I will find a solution. I give 110% in everything I do because I believe that is the epitome of success. It certainly was not easy getting where I am today! I am with The Jason Mitchell Group one of the Largest Business to Business Brokerages in America and on one of the Top Teams at my brokerage. It took wits and grit to get here but I made it! When I first got licensed I was with a small boutique brokerage which was great for me while studying to get my license. However, once I was licensed, I realized I needed a different approach for training which is how I found Keller Williams Carlsbad and my current team. A few months of training, being on a stellar team and 1 KW award later, my team leader decided he wanted more for us as a team. That’s how I came to be at The Jason Mitchell Group. This was the best business decision I have ever made. Keller Williams gave me the training but Jason Mitchell Group gave me the systems and processes to handle a high volume of clientele, along with multiplying my business by 20 times with referrals. I have learned so much along the way. My biggest challenge was not being confident in my process and in myself. I was always comparing myself to others. What I have learned is that if you really work hard everything will come together. I don’t need to compare myself because I am unique in my own way. Until you have that level of confidence you can’t move forward in your success. Just remember to sow good seeds and they will flourish into miraculous things.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s so funny that this is actually a question because my mother is coming to visit and we have this whole itinerary planned. I’m a big seafood lover especially since I’m from the east coast and crabs are my thing. I love to go to Crab Hut to get my crabs but there is nothing like an East Coast crab cake. There is this place called Lucy Mae’s Kitchen and they are pretty much in different locations. You can follow them on Instagram under Lucy Mae’s kitchen. They have pop-up locations where they’re at different brewery’s throughout the week. They have the best crab cakes and food that I have tasted on the west coast that reminds me of back home. Some of my favorite places to visit number one being of course, I love beaches and water, so I love Belmont Park because there’s so many options down there not just for you to go swimming but there’s tons of restaurants you can eat at and there’s also an arcade. In addition to that they have rides for the kiddos and fun family things to do. It’s absolutely amazing. Number two would be to go visit Julian California. You can go up for the day and of course you have to get the caramel apple crumb pie from Julian Pie Company. Best pie I have ever tasted. I actually sent my mother in law one for her birthday this year. Third I would say definitely visit Balboa Park, if you love museums, art, music and nature. And last but not least do not forget to visit Old Town historical Park. I absolutely love that place, it teaches you so much history about California and how they came to be. They also have amazing Mexican food. I’m a little bit of a history nerd, so I love that kind of stuff. And it’s funny because these places are actually some of the places that we plan to visit when my mom comes into town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really want to thank my wife, my daughter, and family for being there for me. They have supported me throughout my entire journey from late night role plays, countless hours of helping me study for the state exam, assisting me with putting out my signs for open houses, marketing, and content creation for lead generation, etc. My wife has been the biggest supporter as she has helped me through every aspect of my business. She was there for me when I was having bad days and giving me all the encouragement in the world! She is my rock and motivation that keeps me moving forward daily no matter what happens. So I want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart!
