We had the good fortune of connecting with Colette Callister and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colette, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We are three sisters who wanted to do something together that would make meaningful difference in the world. We saw a niche that wasn’t being filled–a place for comfortable swimwear that offers more coverage, built-in support, swim suits that women could wear with confidence. We are all mothers (and now 2 of us are grandmothers) and we all have daughters, so this felt very personal. We also love that our swimwear is fun, not-too-serious, and is full of fun and unique prints that can be mixed and matched to express personal style.

We also wanted to be able to give to charities that felt important to us. We have contributed to breast cancer research over the years, because our family carries the BRCA1 gene. Nicole is a breast cancer survivor, and Jennifer is an ovarian cancer survivor. We are pleased to be able to contribute to ongoing research in these areas. We also support Charity Water, because access to clean drinking water helps girls and women with greater personal safety, helps girls be able to attend school, and all this helps build stronger families and communities.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are proud to be a company for women by women. We began designing swimwear for real bodies, with all the qualities we’d want in a swim suit. So we line all our bottoms, we sew in our bra pads (no losing them in the wash) and we build bust support and lining into every top. We fit every style on our own bodies, and we continue to perfect our styles and improve our fit every season. We are passionate about making a high-quality suit that is comfortable and helps every customer feel confident when they were it. No slipping, no sagging.

We are also passionate about giving women lots of options to mix and match our prints and solids in a way that expresses her personal style. We work to create prints that are interesting and unique, and that can be mixed with each other. We create different styles based on her desire for coverage, and we take a lot of pride in our creative process as we create our lines each year.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love our beautiful state of Utah! Our mountains are magestic, so we would take you there no matter what time of year… snow skiing or cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing or sledding in the winter, and hiking with a good picnic when the snow melts, spring, summer and fall. We’d definitely take you to Lone Star Taqueria–we LOVE their fish tacos! Did you know that Crumbl cookies started here?? So cookies for sure! Utah is also known for all the drive-through soda shops–can’t leave without a dirty diet coke!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, the person who deserves the biggest shout-out is our mom! When we first started our business as 3 sisters, our mom sat us down and helped us talk through our ground rules for moving forward. She gave us the courage to begin, and then she instigated our first marketing campaign–she sent an email to everyone in her contact list! And this was back in 2008, before Facebook and social… and her email launched us into success! She is our biggest supporter, and also our greatest example of a strong, intelligent, capable woman. We adore her! And then we couldn’t skip mentioning our husbands, who have been cheerleaders from day 1.
