We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christopher, how does your business help the community?
As an online piano teacher, I have the joy of seeing the impact of music on all of my students whatever their age! It is so wonderful to see a Kindergartner learn to play their first song on the piano, or a middle-school student play their favorite pop song, or an adult student overcome their self-criticism. I believe learning to play the piano provides helpful structure amidst an often chaotic world, personal confidence of one’s own success, and therapeutic emotional catharsis through the power of music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since middle school I have loved to play the piano. While I never envisioned that I would grow up to make a career out of what I love, it is an immense privilege to have been able to do so! The last couple of years building my own private online piano studio and establishing myself as a full-time professional musician was absolutely not easy. It took many late nights till 1am of research, music practice, admin emails and advertising, buying professional equipment, stressing about finances and more to get to where I am today, thriving and loving what I do! The biggest lesson I have learned in the past couple years is that any goal you want to make, can be made, but you should give yourself a minimum of 6 months dedicated hard work to meet that goal before you see it come to life!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Bay Area is such a lovely collection of diverse cities all right next to each other. I would absolutely take them into SF to see Fisherman’s Wharf and Golden Gate Park, then head over to East Bay to walk around downtown Berkeley and Lake Merrit, then maybe take a half-day up to Muir Woods to enjoy the peaceful nature of the redwood trees!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so thankful to all of my own educators and mentors over the years who gave me inspiring models for relationship-based learning, contagious passion for their subject, and patient guidance as I did my best!
