We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheryl Dagostaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheryl, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I am most impressed by people who keep their word, are always on time or early, honest, kind, research if they do not know the answer, organized to a fault and hard-working. I think those habits have helped my businesses grow. They were also instilled in me growing up with hardworking parents.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This may come as a shock to many but I had 32 jobs-many part-time growing up and a handful of full-time. I was always interested in everything-until I would work at some positions-that would make up my mind-this was not for me. Everything from Dairy Queen (ate too much ice cream ; ), retail, waitressing, assembly line, cashier, making jewelry/sales, auto parts manager, fire alarm sales manager, selling cars, working for 8 physicians, Special Education teacher,..and more. My last job was as a front desk administrator at a holistic doctor’s office (MD with his Master’s in Acupuncture). I learned more about holistic health and life at this place-than all my jobs put together. However, the nagging question-what do YOU want to do? never left. I saw a therapist about it as ALL of my friends were laser focused on their careers. I was focused on Everything. He did not skip a beat- he said “You need to be Self-Employed You are an Entrepreneur”. I took a class in how to be self-employed and 7 businesses later…here I am. I still have About 7-10 more projects to go-books, cookbook, inventions, it never ends… I’m driven by my ideas, proud of never selling out my soul/conscience/ethics, solely for money, by doing the right thing by people, excited about my never ending list of things to do. The road getting here was very hard and not for everyone-but worth it for me. Always do what you love.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is the most beautiful city I have ever lived. I have taken my friends to kick around in Balboa Park, admire the beauty at La Jolla cove, Hotel Del Coronado (years ago) when they had 100s of paintings on the walls with the Frank Baum r (author of the Wizard of Oz) room downstairs, the Wild Animal Park-where the animals can run free and once a year-go to the butterfly exhibit where they land on you- if you are dressed with a colorful tshirt, whale watching, Ocean Beach-The Black where the 60s still live and so many more. This incredible city has the most diverse culinary flavors-Thai Time/Lotus Thai, Caldo Pomodoro/Italian food in Carlsbad for a great Arribiata sauce on their pasta, best vegetarian menu ever-Jyoti Bihanga, Mediterranean Cafe, India Palace, and of course-the best sandwiches ever-Classic Rock Sandwich Shoppe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I started Pet-tenders, my Petsitting Business in July 1983, I had one friend, Cheryl Kozlowski (Ashu) who always 100% supported this very unique business. The majority of people I knew, and family, thought I was out of my mind to leave a good paying job and start a company like this. I went from making a good salary to poverty the first 5-6 years I was open. I worked very long hours, heavily promoted it, had 1 customer in 1983, 6-8 in 1984 and then it started taking off. The public was very skeptical of having strangers in their house as no one in San Diego was offering this service. Years later, I franchised my concept with 2 superstars-Lou Gurnick and his partner-Sam. Lou Gurnick was Internationally known as the grandfather of the franchising industry- having put Midas Mufflers on the map, Computerland, Dollar-Rent-A-Car, John Casablancas Modeling Schools and about 150 others. I was extremely fortunate to have worked with this genius for over 10 years. My Petsitting business grew and grew when I decided-time for something new. In 2011, I officially opened the doors of the Classic Rock Sandwich Shoppe-as an homage to musicians of the 60s/early 70s. I lived outside Woodstock, a few years after the festival, and was always obsessed with music. My goal was to have 100 sandwiches-named after the iconic musicians, salads- named after cities that were important during that era and sauces/spreads that could not be found elsewhere. The musicians and the Hippie movement are who I credit solely with my sandwich shoppe.
