We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittaney Banks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittaney, how do you think about risk?
I personally love risk, I have always been one to jump to the idea of taking a risk. I may have not always taken the right ones but overall I wouldn’t say that I regret any of the risk I have taken either. Taking risk is what got me the job I have today, I work for an e-commerce company called Drjays.com. I remember before I got the job, I worked at Bloomingdales for a couple of months, I would make up the craziest excuses to get out of work so I could go assist there and assist on any styling job, including working fashions shows for Nordstrom’s. I eventually got fired and decided that after that I would never take another job again that didn’t have to do with my career, I started taking internships in LA and airbnbing my apartment to cover my bills. A few months went by and I got offered a job at Dr Jays, that was back in 2018. People often ask me how I got the job and I tell them, I just started putting myself out there and taking A LOT of risk. I truly believed that the universe would reward me for being true to myself and chasing after what I loved.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently I am working on an idea that involves fashion and psychology, I can’t go too into detail, but I am currently working on my bachelors in psychology and I am looking forward to changing the world, one style and life at a time! I got where I am today by constantly pushing forward, even in my darkest of moments, but that also comes from having a solid support team. When you have like minded, loving people in your life it makes things a lot easier. Going to therapy and creating new content consistently has also played a huge part in my success. I am constantly trying to put together new shoots to elevate my portfolio but it’s also a stress reliever. There’s been times where I put together a concept I loved so much, that once we shot it, I cried from being so excited! One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is, to remain humble, being humble will get you so far, it shows that you truly care about those around you, as well as your craft. I want the world to just know me, no story really, just know me as the stylist who loved helping people, who loved mental health, and loved creating. I’m a simple person, I just want to spread good energy and style!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For the first couple of days, we would spend it here in San Diego. We would hit a couple of rooftops to eat or we would go to my favorite burger spot in North Park, the friendly! If it’s during baseball season, we’re definitely catching a padres game! Balboa park is a must, the botanical garden is so beautiful, also sunset cliffs to catch one of the famous San Diego sunsets. We would probably check out Coronado beach and the Coronado Brewery as well. Last thing we would check out before we head up to LA, we would make a pit stop at the meditation gardens, it has the most beautiful views. Then we would head up to LA, we would check out the art district and check out the free exhibits there. We would definitely have to check out Grand Central Market for a diverse selection of foods. Venice beach is also a must, do a little shopping from all the different vendors on the boardwalk, then we could hit the Santa Monica pier. Last but not least we would have to do a wine tour in Malibu and see the giraffes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out a few people! First my best friend Kenesha, she has been there for me through so many things over the years, but also she’s one of the biggest inspirations in my life, her dedication and hard work is undeniable and I truly admire her and appreciate her beyond words. Second, I would like to shoutout Lady Maximo, Lady has helped me get started with styling and has blessed me countless times with amazing opportunities to learn and assist her, I will forever be thankful for that. I would also like to shoutout my other best friend Alex, my bro, he will randomly check on me, take me to get food, and listen to all of my craziness without ever judging me, while also taking my photos from time to time, forever grateful. Last but not least, my boyfriend Derrick, this year has been beyond crazy in so many ways, and I’m just thankful that I had him by my side at the peak of it all, my partner, my other half, you’re so dope. So many more people as well, Noelle, Rameses, David, Terrance, Talon, the list goes on and on. Thank you all for all of the love and support!
