We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Masters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brett, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have a mentor/coach who is a man of extremely high competency and has achieved great success in his career. Now in his 80’s he often says that if he had it all to do over again, he would dream bigger dreams and take bigger risks… because everything he ever dreamed came true and he wonders if he limited God by dreaming too small! He is a pastor and has always been a BIG dreamer… His capacity to dream has inspired countless others to dream big and take steps of faith toward those dreams and goals. In many ways, I feel like I’m following in his footsteps… I have always been a big dreamer and I realized at an early age that if my dreams are ever to become reality, I have to be willing to take risks… sometimes terrifying risks! Sir Winston Churchill has been quoted as saying that “success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” I love that thought and keeping this in mind has helped me to have the inner toughness and grit to take a risk, knowing that even if I fail, I’m going to learn something valuable and just get up and try again. So, I’ve come to enjoy risk and the feelings that come along with it… In many ways, it’s a good litmus test to let me know that I’m still moving in the right direction and I haven’t lost the pursuit of my dream!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
With my wife and a small team, together we launched the Dream Center Lake Elsinore in October 2014 with the vision to Restore & Rebuild the People and Property of LE physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We began meeting every week to “adopt blocks” in the historic downtown community… picking up litter & painting over graffiti, hosting festivals for children and families in the park, bringing food and clothes to those who were struggling to get by… etc., etc. It’s been over 8 years now of consistently serving and making a difference in our community and the effort has snowballed beyond our wildest dreams! In 8 years, we’ve been able to invest nearly $10 million into our local community via donations and volunteer hours! It’s been an amazing journey so far and we’re continuing to look for opportunities to have an even greater impact in order to bring positive transformation to our beautiful city. From the start, one of our strongest convictions or values has been the importance of consistency… perseverance. If there’s one thing that has made us successful, it’s been that we’ve refused to give up. We believe we have a unique mission to bring transformation and healing to those in need and we’re convinced that consistency is the key to success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Having the privilege of living in Southern California, I’d be hard pressed to stay local but for the purposes of this context, I’ll keep it in Lake Elsinore… there’s SO much people don’t know about beautiful LE!
1-Walk the levee at dawn and be amazed by the glassy water covered by a blanket of fog… you can spot a flock of fresh-water pelicans, egrets, great blue herons, and many other beautiful wildlife
2-Breakfast: Annie’s Cafe for incredible British style treats–BEST coffee cake imaginable!–in a fun UK atmosphere with the occasional song and dance to spice things up!
3-DeJongs Dairy… petting zoo, amazing chocolate milk, wonderful family owned (oldest family owned biz in the area)
4-Lunch: Best Mexican food north of the border… El Unico (taco shop in city park, downtown LE)
5-Walk old main street in Historic Downtown to check out several unique shops and points of interest including: LE Historical Society, Roses Recollections, The Chimes, and many others
6-Stop into Bloom before leaving downtown to grab a Scoop-and-Brew or a delicious ice cream cone if you’re more traditional!
7-Go to a AAA Baseball game at the enchanting Storm Stadium where baseball still feels like an all-American, hometown favorite pastime!
8-Drive up the Ortega highway to take in a birds-eye view of the beautiful LE valley at sunset… Mt. San Jacinto, Mt. Baldy, Mt. San Grogornio, and Mt. Palomar all visible on a clear day!
9-Stay the night at one of the yurts in the newly redeveloped Launch Pointe campground and resort along the north side of the lake (you can rent a boat, enjoy the pool, go fishing, and have a meal at the outdoor deck with live music at “The Bobber”)
10-Before you leave LE, you’ll have to see it all from 10,000 feet by visiting SkyDive LE along Corydon Street at the south end of the lake
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my best friend, co-dreamer, and ministry partner… my wife, Aubrey Masters. She is every bit as capable as I am and it is an absolute joy and an honor to work alongside her in our ministry at the Dream Center. As Co-Founder, she has been an integral part in the success of the DCLE from the very beginning and continues to keep us moving in the right direction every day. Nearly 10-years of hard work, consistent perseverance, overcoming obstacles together! Not to mention, she is an incredible mother to our 4 kids… Needless to say, I am beyond grateful!
