We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brett, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
We had been making our cashews at home for a number of years and everyone who tried them would say “these are great! you should sell them”. We would laugh to ourselves and joke around, not taking the idea very seriously. Then a few years back I was diagnosed with throat cancer and it was a tremendously tough road (2 surgeries, 35 radiations and 8 chemo sessions). We made it through but unfortunately a little over a year later, the cancer came back again, this time in my lung. Knowing what treatments were potentially ahead of us again, we knew we needed a light at the end of the tunnel to get us through the dark times. So we started our company with the goal of getting our product on the shelf of one store and have one person buy our creation. (I am happy to report a clean bill of health for the last two years)
What should our readers know about your business?
We launched B’s Gourmet Nuts with the thought of providing a quality nut to complement the many wonderful meats and cheeses being offered on the charcuterie board. In addition, we designed our packaging to function as a hostess gift and accessorize a bottle of wine. We have a simple approach to our creations: identify the highest quality ingredients, prepare with great precision and present in an artful manner. Our goal is to provide a final product you will be proud to gift to a friend or bring into your home time and time again.
What we want the world to know about our humble company is we are having the time of our lives trying to bring a” little bit of perfect ” to people while trying to spread a little bit of happiness and inspiration along the way
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first spot we would make sure they see is the view from Cabrillo National Monument. Our on the town itinerary would start with a cocktail at Cusp Rooftop Bar in La Joya, then enjoy a wonderful sunset dinner at Pacific Coast Grill with a nightcap at the Hotel Del. The next day we would make sure to visit the Little Italy Farmer’s Market, swing by Venissimo Cheese in North Park and Siesel’s Old Fashioned Meats all to ensure we are stocked up on the necessary provisions. After running our errands, we would make sure our feet are firmly planted in the sand for the rest of the day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our shoutout is to everyone who supported us during our difficult times – there were so many people and the support was emotionally overwhelming, we did not know where to begin or how to say thank you. So our thank you to them is by us donating a portion of our net proceeds to the Cancer Wellness Center. We simply want to help patients and caregivers find their “light” to guide them through their dark times, especially those who may not have the support we were so fortunate to have.
