We had the good fortune of connecting with Brent Humpherys and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brent, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The success of Humpherys Homes & Estates and our real estate brand has never been about me or us—it’s always been about the people we serve. From day one, our focus has been entirely on understanding and prioritizing our clients’ needs, always putting their goals ahead of our own. Integrity isn’t just a word we use—it’s the foundation of every interaction, every negotiation, and every piece of advice we offer. We view ourselves as advocates, not just agents, and that mindset guides every decision we make. When honesty, empathy, and a commitment to doing what’s right guides every action, trust leads to longevity with clients and word-of-mouth referrals. Consumers need to know that we have their back, and we’ve been blessed to have folks publish reviews about how we “saved them” from a transaction, or that that home of their dreams would have been a nightmare had we not warned them of potential pitfalls. Real estate purchases and sales are often the most significant economic transactions of a person’s life. and if we see or even perceive that something isn’t right or good about the investment or deal, we take pride in speaking up! There are plenty of homes which could represent the “right” choice, and we have zero hesitation in warning our clients and suggesting cancellation if it means protecting them from a bad deal.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Real estate has permeated every aspect of my life—it’s not just a career, but is part of who I am. My grandfather began serving buyers and sellers in 1967, and my mother entered the business in 1976. Some of my earliest memories are of tagging along with her to real estate seminars, sometimes a week long, which essentially served as my childhood babysitters. By the time I was eight, I was already working in her office, helping with mailing campaigns, prepping open house supplies, and even going on appointments. We didn’t have GPS in the 70s, so I became Mom’s navigator with a Thomas Brothers Map Book in my lap, giving her turn-by-turn directions from the back seat of her green Mercedes. Even as a kid, I knew this was the career I dreamed of. I spent much of my teen years helping at open houses, and later earned a four-year degree in Real Estate from San Diego State University. But what sets our business apart isn’t just our history—it’s our hyper focus on the client’s needs and aspirations. Everything we do is rooted in integrity and consumer advocacy. We don’t view ourselves as salespeople—we’re advisors, partners, and problem-solvers. This focus has guided us through every challenge and market. If there’s one thing I’d want the world to know about our brand, it’s that we’re built on trust, legacy, and an unwavering commitment to putting our clients first.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d plan a week they’d never forget—either in beautiful Carlsbad or on the magical shores of Catalina Island, two places that hold a special place in my heart (and I have homes in both of places.) In Carlsbad, we’d start the morning at Vinaka Café in the Village—great coffee, local vibe, and a view of the ocean from their little upstairs patio. We’d walk the beach trail, breathe in the salt air, and then possibly shoot down to La Jolla and rent kayaks to paddle along the coastline. One evening we’d head to The Poseidon in Del Mar for dinner—an iconic spot where the waves practically crash at your table. We’d explore local shops, catch live music back in Carlsbad Village, and spend time relaxing at Tamarack Beach.
If we were on Catalina Island, mornings would begin with a coffee and pastry from Catalina Coffee & Cookie Company, then a golf cart ride tour around Avalon before heading to the beach for a day of sun, snorkeling, or just soaking it all in. One afternoon we’d take our own kayaks and cruise past the Casino and head a bit north to stop at some super private coves. For dinner, Topside by NDMK is a favorite—great food, local wines, and views that are pure Catalina. We’d also carve out time to hike the Garden to Sky trail for unbeatable views of both coasts of the island in one of its more narrow sections. Looking down at coastlines on both sides of you is pure magic.
Whether it’s Carlsbad or Catalina, the week would be about slowing down, connecting with local people and places, and just enjoying the beauty that makes Southern California so special.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Whenever I am asked to do a shoutout, my heart and mind effortlessly point to my beloved mother, Sandi Humpherys. Mom was the best real estate broker I’ve ever met, and growing up under her leadership and tenacity in negotiating for her clients was such a gift and really an inspiration. Mom fought hard for her clients, and I’m tempted to write a book about what she brought to the industry. There’s no shortage of stories I could offer, but here’s one: she was representing a young couple who was excited about purchasing their first home. They were a military family and had worked hard both protecting our country and also saving for a humble place to call their own. Using VA financing with no money down isn’t always the easiest for a buyer, as they often compete with other buyers who have, say, a 10% to 20% down payment. Well, Mom negotiated a win for this couple and got them under contract with the seller, but when the VA appraisal came in lower than the sales price, Mom petitioned the VA and was granted a hearing which led to her driving from San Diego all the way up to Los Angeles where she appeared in a hearing and literally pleaded for her clients. The VA granted Mom’s petition which paved the way for her clients to close on their first home. Throughout Mom’s life, I witnessed countless occasions where I saw her in action in fiercely advocating for her buyers and sellers, and when she was looking to retire, I formed Humpherys Homes & Estates as a legacy corporation to honor her work and create a brand around a trusted name here in San Diego. This made transition smooth with Mom’s 40+ year client base and her being able to pass the baton to me as I serve folks who would call for her services and find me ready to spring into action for them. I am so blessed to have had Mom as a fabulous and enthusiastic mentor!
