We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Pryce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ben, what do you attribute your success to?
Customer Service, and by extension, word-of-mouth marketing for sure! Both branches of the business (campervan rentals and custom conversions) service really emotional purchasing decisions for our clients. A vacation needs to be relaxing+recharging, and a custom campervan purchase is close to buying a custom home, so we need to make sure that we are really providing top-notch service for our clients to make sure their experience lives up the expectation. If we nail it, undoubtedly the clients are going to talk about their experiences, share photos, invite friends to do the same, and word-of-mouth marketing is the most powerful sales tool an entrepreneur has.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It’s been a long, windy road to get here. Far from obvious, but absolutely inevitable. At 32, I’ve already gone through a number of career paths, slowly figuring out what I want, and don’t want, out of life. But each time I find myself at a dead end, I know I’m closer to my end goal, it just means a bit more work. Dead-ends are just dead-ends if you don’t turn around and try something else. The name Vamonos Vans is definitely centered around the Spanish translation, “let’s go” or “let’s leave”, as it’s kind of been my guiding force. I can ramble about how dangerous complacency and stagnation in life are, but in short I’ve seen a lot of people with big, passionate dreams, never make a move because they were either too comfortable, or too scared. I vowed to never let that be me, so whenever I’ve decided I wanted something, there’s a chorus of voices in my head singing “If you really want it, let’s go do it”. That’s what helped me move across from CT to CA alone, and what helped me quit my corporate job to start working for myself. Needless to say, just like with a roadtrip vacation, entreneurship isn’t all green lights. The hardest part is having to pick yourself up and redirect when something doesn’t work out. To suceed, you have to be willing to keep pushing when most would give up. If you want to drive from LA to NYC, you don’t wait for every light to be green along the way, and you don’t let a closed road end your roadtrip. Same in life, and entrepreneurship. If you want it, be willing to work for it, really work for it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is super Campervan/RV friendly. If it’s surfing you’re after, Ocean Beach has the most RV friendly parking lot. If it’s mountains and hikes, Palomar Mountain’s dispersed camping spots are a must. Then if you’re a desert rat, Anza Borrego Desert State Park is your playground!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely have to dedicate this shoutout to my parents, and good family friends from when I was growing up, the Clarks. Both of my parents graduated college with engineering degrees; one mechanical and one electrical. Needless to say I grew up with legos, erector sets, model cars, hobby electronics, etc. We also fixed our own cars, and did repairs/remodels on our house. If tinkering and building was the goal, i was into it, undoubtedly genetic. My first “job” was actually duplicating the circuit boards my father used for his business, electrical toy design. Fast forward to my late teens and I starting working for my best friends’ parents remodeling company, started driving around a cargo van and cleaning up after contractors on gorgeous Connecticut homes. At the same time, I was really into the California surf+skate culture, where the surf van was always a fixture. And my gears started turning around the possibilities. At the end, both sets of parents were amazingly supportive, and saw my potential even if I was missing it at the time. Without it, who knows what I’d be doing now, instead of building my dream.
