We had the good fortune of connecting with Becs O’Hara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Becs, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After I had my daughter in 2019 I knew I wasn’t going to be heading back into a show full time. Aside from the show I worked as a choreographer for a few production companies and so It was another string to my bow other than performing. I decided it was my time to put my stamp on the city and create a company that was equal opportunities for ALL with a strong element of female empowerment. I created City Katz, a company that pays performers fairly, is highly respectful of performers time and strives to create a working environment that accepts all. I even hired a babysitter to sit in at one of my rehearsals so the women with children could bring their kids a long and they didn’t have to worry about childcare.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is performance art, although I also design and create costumes and design and paint the props which my husband makes for me. But generally I choreograph and direct. I think my company is different than most as I offer stock shows so if clients don’t have time or budget to create bespoke productions for their events then they can use one of the city Katz shows and tailor it to fit their event. It definitely has not been an easy road, especially as I started this journey right before covid. My trajectory in 2019 was advanced but unfortunately entertainment took a huge hit the following year. I’m still struggling to get back to my previous success. It’s also hard doing everything by myself as I don’t have a team behind me and I now have an 8 week old son to add to my family so I’m definitely juggling a lot. Buuuut I’m very proud of myself for every client I book and every small achievement I make. There is no greater feeling then paying people and making money for my family.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love when my friends come to visit because I like to show them all that vegas has to offer and it blows their minds. Definitely a hike up mount Charleston to see the wild horses and the snow in the winter, I also love the Colorado hot springs hike which can only be done in the winter months. A boat on lake mead and water sports and lake Las Vegas is also I must in the summer. We always will get in a show, my favourites being Vegas! The show (of course, this is the show I was a part of for 4 years before getting pregnant) and O by cirque du Soleil are definitely must sees. And I love going downtown to drink at the bars there, it definitely has a much cooler artsy vibe then the main strip.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely have to shoutout my original City Katz girls who worked so hard to see my vision was achieved, and never questioning the process. Kirbi Jo Long, Lora Kelsey, Elyse Corbin, Adrea McNulty, Megan Melville, Anlly Allen and Heather Guernsey who always has my back and is a firm believer in City Katz.
Of course my loving husband Sean who would do anything for me to help and my daughter Arabella who gave me the fire to start.
