We had the good fortune of connecting with Banning Cantarini and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Banning, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The way you measure success can impact your brand across a large spectrum. If you set yourself up for failure, you will lose yourself in a defeat mindset and that can impact not only your business, but your relationships at home and beyond. So for us, success is constantly evolving. In the beginning, success was creating a brand with an honest story. Then, success was about building something with our hands that people would love and enjoy. During the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when a business like ours should have been destined to fail, success became renting our trailer out at a reduced cost so people could continue celebrating their various achievements in their own back yards. So the most important factor behind our success is that we are constantly adapting what success looks like in a specific context. That way, we never fail as a brand and company. We only have to adapt.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With a trio of co-owners, Pioneer has a multitude of different strengths and individual qualities. The hardest challenge initially was learning out to acknowledge and trust each others differences. After we learned how to exist in a business together, the possibilities became endless. Because instead of approaching a challenge with one perspective, we now have multiple solutions available at any given time. And with owning a business, problem-solving is about as important a quality as you can have.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here is the perfect day according to the people at Pioneer: Step one: A little sunrise coffee jumpstart at the Nautical Bean in the Oceanside harbor. Watching the sun wake up while we wake up in a beautiful harbor setting. Step two: Breakfast. This is in WAY North County…the very edge of San Diego existence…Rainbow Oaks in Rainbow, CA. That spot just hits different when it comes to the breakfast game. Step three: Funtivities. While digesting some serious breakfast, we like to hit up estate sales. You can find them online and we rarely ever miss one. If none are available, South Oceanside has some fun places to visit. Captain’s Helm for vintage clothes or Seahive for some cool trinkets and treasures. Step four: Lunch. One of my favorite spots in San Diego…TJ OYSTER! That spot…get yourself some taco’s, some oysters, some ice cold beverages and just be glad you’re alive. Step five: More funtivities. It must be said that there are just some secret spots (swimming holes, back country trails, fishing spots, etc…) that we cannot disclose in good conscience. If there’s a padres game, we’re going. We have some pretty amazing golf courses to play, that’s always fun as well (Arrowood is our personal favorite). But it’s also really tough to beat a solid day at the beach. Pack a cooler and go galavant around the Pacific Ocean. Step six: The Pre-game. This is when it gets fun. One of our favorite watering holes would have to be the Pour House in Oceanside. It also has a soft spot in our hearts because that’s where Banning and Brittany (2/3 of Pioneer) first met. Step seven: Dinner. If you’re down in San Diego, we love Lola 55. If you’re in North County, which we often are, there is really only one choice. CAMPFIRE. I’ll never look at broccoli the same way again. Step eight: Live music and a darn good time. The Vineyard 1924 in Fallbrook is such a rad spot. They have all the essentials to have a relaxing, fun evening. Live music from some of San Diego’s best musicians? Check. Rotating food truck schedule with endless snack options? Check. Sangria that will turn any frown upside down? Check. Family Friendly? Check. Those eight decisions are a one way ticket to a great day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Pioneer would like to shoutout all of the people out there who refused to quit during the Covid-19 pandemic. The unparalleled challenges that a lot of small businesses faced this past year were often met with unparalleled creativity and solutions. That small business creativity and spirit has been a source of inspiration and motivation for us at Pioneer, and we solute those who continue to grind with us everyday!
