We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Valentine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Dogs are a species that people interact with frequently. They are in so many households, neighborhoods, parks, trails, bars and restaurants. I aim to help people who own dogs to understand their dogs perspective of the world they have found themselves in. They get an understanding of their dogs abilities in different situations and how to help them cope with human life better in a positive and fun way. I help owners navigate through public settings in a way that creates positive boundaries for their dog in order to keep everyone including the dog happy and safe.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science from UCONN and am a Nationally Certified Canine Behavior Consultant
(CBCC-KA) and Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA). I have completed a Complete Canine Certification in Canine Aggression master course where I use positive reinforcement, management, and safety techniques to help owners and dogs with all levels of aggression, leash reactivity, fear, anxiety and confidence building. My goals are happy, loved dogs with confident, knowledgeable owners.
I am most excited about my clients dogs who are scared/fearful of other dogs getting to a point where they make that first new friend. I love seeing them light up and look like they are so proud of themselves!
I started a small daycare out of our house for dogs who needed some extra hep with their social skills and confidence. I ended up getting a lot of requests from people who were recently “excused” or not accepted into other daycares for many different reasons. I am so proud to say that most of those dogs are now our welcoming committee for the newcomers! They have all grown so much and have a great group of friends that have grown over the years to the point where we could open a facility, but we all really like our home daycare setting and the dogs appreciate it too! So we are keeping things just the way they are!
I started out learning the basics about dog training and found myself getting stuck in certain areas, so I did some research and found programs that teach the ins and outs of how to improve behavior cases and ended up running out of room on my wall because I filled it up with certifications.
I was nervous to start my own business because of all of the “unknowns” but I bit the bullet and went for it. My training career has taught me so much about dogs but also people and. their learning styles, how their dogs affect them emotionally, mentally and many other ways.
I have fostered thousands of dogs by now and that has been so fulfilling but also taught me immensely about so many more tips and tricks on becoming the trainer and dog savvy person that I am now. Fostering dogs is probably my favorite passion!!
We started small but its turned into a huge group effort! There are so many people that are involved in our business that we now call it our “compound” where anyone who wants to be more involved with dogs should come. That’s how we ended up with the name Family Dog Consulting!
