We had the good fortune of connecting with Annemarie Alf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annemarie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I founded OLYMPUS MOVEMENT PERFORMANCE because I wanted to create a space that focuses on the WHOLE person and athlete. After spending many years in my younger professional career with youth and high school aged athletes, I returned to those roots in the foundation of creating Olympus Movement Performance. I want to offer a holistic approach to your health with a treatment plan specific to YOU. But Olympus doesn’t just focus on the young athlete. I have seen a huge void in the traditional medical and physical therapy settings in actually addressing the root causes of injuries and ‘diseases.’ For this reason I created the Holistic/ Integrated approach that Functional Medicine/ Nutrition and Hormone Balancing allows for to assess and treat the WHOLE person.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Way back in the early 2000s I started as a Performance and Strength coach in competitive youth soccer and gymnastics. The focus was always injury reduction 1st and foremost and speed, strength and performance to follow. In 2011, I finished my Doctorate in Physical Therapy and a few months later moved to China- to lead the Chinese Olympic Gymnastics Teams in both Performance Physical Therapy and Strength and Performance Training. In my time in China and immediate return to the US in late 2012, I learned the benefits of a fully integrated and holistic approach to treating the athlete and the human body. In 2017, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to make all this a reality with opening Olympus Movement in Vista, CA. 2020 brought a whole new level of challenges- from COVID closures and changes AND navigating my new role as Performance/ Medical Director of the San Diego Loyal- the new professional mens soccer club kicking off in March 2020.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Carlsbad/ North County SD has become my new home. Number one favorite restaurant is for sure Blue Ocean Sushi in the village. When I get a quick minute away to head to the beach- we’d keep it simple and just walk down to Offshore area at the end of Carlsbad Village- just a bit south. Heading up to Big Bear and the mountains is a for sure must for some trail running, mountain biking and relax time. When the SD Loyal SC are in season you will for sure find me and friends again soon; at Torero Stadium at USD supporting the team both on and off the field. Without a doubt you’d also see me sipping some local Califino Tequila, in their soon to be new tasting room in Carlsbad.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had the phenomenal opportunity to be surrounded and lead by some of the best in my profession- especially early on. I spent nearly a year under David Joyce and Rett Larson in China with the Olympic program. Returning to Arizona I was lead side by side by Sue Falsone and Brett Bartholomew. But in recent years Olympus would not have come to be without Brittany Peterson and Phil Salvagio.
