We had the good fortune of connecting with Anndrea Boren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anndrea, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Finding balance in life is one of the most important things a person can do. Not just in work, but in diet, in lifestyle, in all of the choices we make. Every single choice we make has a consequence whether good or bad. When I first started my event coordination company, it was so that I could be a stay at home mom and still have a creative outlet by doing what I love. I didn’t have a lot of work initially and social media wasn’t as big of a deal back then (boy I sound old! HA) so I didn’t focus very heavily on marketing and just took what came in via word of mouth, etc. As my business started to grow, as the need for social media presence increased, my time definitely got squeezed more so in the direction of grow, grow, GROW. As my business started to grow my self care and family time diminished which also affected how well I worked. As I have matured and my business practices have matured, I know to be sure that I have an entire day, sometimes TWO whole days (what?!?) off to be focus solely on my family and just resting without responding to emails/texts every five minutes. I also make sure that I block out a couple weeks in the year where we can take family trips and I know I can’t book anything during those times. I make sure that eat well, especially on a wedding day, cause let’s be honest, if you’re in the industry we all struggle with not eating much cause we have too much going on! I try to find time to exercise regularly to keep fit, energetic, and overall mentally well. I try to spend a couple days on marketing a month! I probably could do more but I am happy with how things are progressing at this point. My kids are growing up so fast! As much as I love my company, I don’t want to miss out on anything! I am currently homeschooling both my kids, Sebastian is a 7th grader and Evelyn is a 5th grader this year, but I am working right along side of them, pausing when they need my help! It’s not always easy but I find myself feeling more balanced than even before I had this much business…I just had to learn to actually schedule “stopping” in!
What should our readers know about your business?
Peaches to Poppies is full design and event coordination company. I started my company back in 2008 as Events by Anndrea. I was a stay at home mom and didn’t put a lot of time into growing it. But I loved it and enjoyed it so much. I hit a lull in 2015 and let my business go. I got a full time job for the first time since having kids and quickly learned how much I loved weddings and events. It was my true calling. So in 2017 I rebranded and started up again! Since then, I am so blessed to be able to be doing this full time!!! I couldn’t have imagined how just taking the time and risk to go all in would make such a big difference! Before I was a stay at home mom, I worked in the hospitality industry from high school on. From hostess, to serving, to bar tending, to cook, to sales, and coordination…I’ve got literal hands-on experience in it all! I understand what needs to happen and how it actually happens! Since I have been in this industry since 2004, I am not surprised by much and I don’t get stressed very often which comes out in my work! I absolutely LOVE my job! It’s not just a means of work but an actual joy for me! That is what makes my company stand apart! I have the know-how and the drive to help make your dream event come to life!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in San Diego County is, in my opinion, the best! There are so many things to do and great places to eat at!!! We’d definitely have a full San Diego day. We have Zoo passes so we’d have to check out Balboa Park for a bit then walk into the Zoo and have that whole experience! We could end the day with some great food by walking through Little Italy and picking any number of incredible restaurants! We’d for sure need a beach day! We tend to avoid super large crowded beaches but with a newbie around we’d go check out Oceanside Pier and maybe grab a milkshake from Ruby’s…but go to a more secluded beach such as The Point in Carlsbad or Terra Mar. We could grab donuts from The Goods, coffee at Steady State, and couldn’t miss out on dinner and cocktails at Campfire and if we somehow had room – grab an ice cream from Handles! We have some amazing shops nearby to check out on a different day…we could grab a coffee at Captains Grounds before perusing Captian’s Helm, Sea Hive Marketplace, Rising Co, and Landmark Plant Co. We could grab some bites from LTH or Masters but I do love the fish taquitos over at Privateer! We could also jump on the bike path and ride down to Oceanside Harbor before sunset. Grab an ice cram over at Nana’s and Pops sweet Shop before riding back! Can’t forget about some fun places to go hike. We do like the different local lagoons that are worth checking out, maybe even paddle boarding or kayaking. But we may have to go check out Annie’s Canyon in Salona Beach and eat at View Point Brewery in Del Mar. A day in La Jolla is probably worth the time! Sea Caves, and seals galore with some great eateries! Herringbone is pretty delicious but even something as simple as The Taco Stand would work. But as much I as I like to run around, we’d definitely just have a night where we have a bonfire in our own backyard and walk down to Primos Food Mart to grab some of the best meat and fresh tortillas to cook off our own tacos and just enjoy our time together!!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Alex Boren, has always been right there for me! Without him, I wouldn’t be able to succeed. He has always taken care of the kids for me while I’m gone – sometimes for a couple days at a time! He helps reload the car when I didn’t do a good job. He helped me with my rebrand! He is a great sounding board when I need it! I am so blessed to have him! Love you babe!
