We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Compton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was deeply rooted in my observations of the environmental challenges I witnessed living on my sailboat in the marina. The constant influx of pollution in my surroundings made me acutely aware of the impact on the quality of life in Los Angeles. During my work in designing for an ecommerce farm-to-table floral company, I gained a profound understanding of the hardships faced by farmers due to failed harvests and the labor-intensive process of bringing flowers to customers. Additionally, I couldn’t ignore the significant amount of flower waste generated in the industry, which made each stem’s value clear. My visits to the flower market were disheartening as I witnessed the overwhelming flower waste.

Motivated to instigate change, I went on a mission to transform the flower industry’s waste into something beautiful while safeguarding the environment. This led me to repurpose flower stems and create a sustainable business model that aligns with my can-do lifestyle and contributes to a greener future by reducing excessive waste.

Simultaneously, my overarching objective was to instill delight in our customers through unique, nature-inspired arrangements that capture the essence of the sea, reinforcing our connection with the environment while strategically advancing our sustainable business model.

My creative process involves suspending dried flowers from the boat’s boom and crafting contraptions wherever space allows. I rely on the salt air and sun to dry the stems. Being out on the waves provides me with a distinctive perspective on my craft, resulting in wild, freeform arrangements that evoke the feeling of freshly gathered blooms from a mountainside.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Professionally, our journey to where we are today has been both rewarding and challenging. It certainly hasn’t been easy, but overcoming the obstacles has been a part of the adventure. Living on a sailboat presents unique challenges, such as limited space and an environment that is not temperature-controlled. However, we’ve turned these challenges into opportunities by specializing in working with dried stems and preserved materials.

Working with dried stems has become a cornerstone of our business model because it allows us to maximize our limited space and adapt to the unpredictable environment on the sailboat. Unlike fresh flowers, dried stems don’t expire quickly, which means we can create beautiful arrangements without worrying about product wastage due to temperature fluctuations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Out on the Santa Monica Bay, of course.
