We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Cloutier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, what role has risk played in your life or career?
How do I think about risk. I feel risk is a vital piece of what pushes us to become more. It’s almost like a puzzle piece we have to choose to push the vision we have for our lives forward and that’s what it’s done for me; it’s pushed me forward. Risking is betting on yourself. Without stepping out into the unknown I personally would have never realized my true potential as an artist or even as a photographer. Taking risks has helped me tremendously when it has come to growing my business, learning, and even growing as a person. It’s opened doors I never thought would be open for me; without it I wouldn’t have made it into rooms that only grew opportunities for me and pushed me forward.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I believe what sets my art apart from others is my photographic style which is raw and authentic . It brings to surface a connection between the photographer and her subject; the art and the artist. I’m most proud of my growth throughout this whole process. I believe I got to where I am today professionally because I kept pushing myself forward. I just never gave up. I kept telling myself I am capable, and I had an eagerness and excitement to learn and to connect. Was it easy? Absolutely not. I was able to overcome different challenges because I knew those challenges would eventually turn into lessons that would benefit me in the long run. I also had people in my life who believed in me and what I could bring to the table, their belief in me pushed me to want so much more. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to truly believe in yourself, be your biggest competition, and believe you are capable of anything you are truly passionate about. For anyone who takes an interest in me or my photography, I want them to know I put my all into each image I photograph. It truly is a connection between the artist and the art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many good places to go in San Diego/ Los Angeles. If a friend was visiting to San Diego, I would definitely take them to Draft Coffee in Mission Beach, the Rooftop at the Nolan in Downtown San Diego, Morning Glory and Salt and Straw in Little Italy. Then we would take a drive up the 101 Hwy to Santa Monica and visit Urth Caffe. Then a little further into Los Angeles to the Fairfax Flea Market, then the arts district. I think these are just a few of the best places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say there isn’t just one person to shout out, but I would love to shout out my mother and my sister for always believing in me no matter what, and of course my friends, for seeing my true potential and always pushing me forward, in my creativity and with my goals. I appreciate them all and I could never thank them enough.
