We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Chee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angela, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, raised by Chinese immigrant parents. My parents came to the US from Taiwan in the 70″s. At times they lost their voices, they lost their voices to fit in, they lost their voices so I could have mine. Their sacrifice is my privilege and I don’t take that for granted. I now know this was not necessarily a trait of their personality or culture, but rather one of survival. Even though they taught me to not rock the boat and to play it safe, something bigger always called to me. That’s why I believe I always wanted to go into TV News to help others share their stories and why I became a speaker and now a communication coach, to help others break through their barriers, own their voice and power and step into their leadership. My vision is to create positive change in the world by elevating change makers voices through power, presence and representation. Power to influence and impact others. Presence to embody your values, message and mission. Representation to be seen, heard and inspire future generations.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an on-camera/communication coach and through my YOU, Amplified!® speaker, video, and media training programs I help people feel clear, confident, and connected and be ready for any opportunity on camera and off.

Most traditional trainings focus just on performance. Performance matters, but it’s only one step. When my corporate and entrepreneurial clients have to prepare for an important speech or panel, have a media interview, or need to make their own videos, we can give them the tools and resources to be on-camera and stage-ready. But being YOU, Amplified!® isn’t just about the external, it’s also about the internal. It’s about knowing who you are, what you stand for, and how you want to show up in the world.

What sets me apart is my passion for bringing out the best in people. As a former Los Angeles and San Diego TV news anchor and host, I know what it’s like to be in the spotlight, but I also know what’s like to struggle to own your voice and break through barriers. This helps me understand my clients’ needs and fears, connect with them on a very personal level, and give them “real world” insight, strategies, tools, and inspiration to amplify their star power.

YOU, Amplified!® is a combination of my 20+ years of experience in the media and speaking industry and the process I went through to step into my leadership.

My whole life I’ve been an Only, the only Asian girl growing up in a neighborhood, the only Asian reporter at a station or the only woman keynote speaker. But I believe there is power in being The Only. That’s what I’m exploring in my podcast and soon to be book-“The Power Of The Only” lessons learned from leaders breaking barriers, defying the odds and creating positive change. I also share advice and resources to help you step up, speak up and make an impact.

Being an only can be lonely at times, but you are not alone.

I’m excited to continue to work with visionary companies and leaders through one on one coaching and virtual and in-person keynotes and workshops. Soon I will be launching my YOU, Amplified!® online library filled with video training courses from “How To Be Confident On-Camera” to “Amplify Your Virtual Presence” to “Be Media Interview Ready” and more. We will continue the powerful conversations on Year 2 of “The Power Of The Only” podcast and will be writing The Power Of The Only book.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What I love about San Diego is the variety. I like to explore different parts of the city based on my mood. For a beautiful view right by the airport, I’d head to Coasterra where you can dine by the water and view the downtown skyline. Little Italy is a great spot for nightlife and food. My favorites are Herb and Wood and for dessert-Extraordinary Desserts, which has the most delicious and beautiful cakes. For outdoor adventure, nothing beats hiking Torrey Pines, and if you want something simple and different check out the hidden Annie’s Canyon Trail. If you’re a foodie, I love Market in Del Mar, but my favorite place for food is Convoy St. You can find all things Asian. For dumplings head to Dumpling Inn and Shanghai Saloon. Ramen-Raki Raki. Vietnamese-Phuong Trang. There are tons of boba shops, but my favorite is DaYung’s because of the fresh fruit options. And for a unique dessert, Iceskimo-Taiwanese shaved snow. For the resort getaway feel, I love Rancho Valencia hotel and The Pony Room. And then drive up the coast through Cardiff and soulful Encinitas. I’d also make sure I stop by my favorite cafe-Parakeet Cafe which makes me smile with its healthy organic food and salads. My go-to’s are Acai bowls covered in edible flowers and a Tumeric Latte.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who shaped me into who I am. I believe there are mentors all around us and each of us can make an impact through our words, our energy and our actions. From my 7th grade teacher who encouraged me to enter my 1st speech competition to my family and ancestors for their strength and resilience, to those close to me for their support and to those who I may not know, but continue to create and share their gifts with the world. Keep going. Thank you.
