We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Saurer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from a small town in Massachusetts. We were poor and my parents fought their way to a divorce. From the age of four, I remember the desire to become a professional athlete in order to get out of my current situation of living in a trailer on a farm. The heating furnace produced so much black soot, the few stuffed animals I had were covered! I couldn’t play with them because my mom had to wash the black residue off. There was nothing to be happy about except the animals that provided some comfort.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Competitive bodybuilding does not provide an income. As a professional athlete, I have the opportunity to win money from some shows by coming in 1st place. However the prize money is minimal, unless you’re the best female bodybuilder in the world, competing on the biggest stage every year.

I had to figure out a way to make money while pursuing my passion of bodybuilding. It takes years of consistent training, dieting and recovering to create a sculpted hard-body. I competed on the amateur level for almost a decade before winning my International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) pro status. In 2016 I won my light-heavyweight division at the USA in Las Vegas which earned my pro card. I spent the next four years building muscle before stepping on a pro stage at the peak of a pandemic in 2020. All the gyms in Los Angeles were closed that entire year! I also lost my full-time job due to Covid. Through all those challenges, I still managed to train myself with the help of a coach and prepare for my pro debut in Savannah, GA that year. I proudly placed in the top five of my first IFBB pro show.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have an exclusive photographer that helped me break the mold during my 10 year modeling career. His creative ideas, video shoots and editing skills enabled me to earn enough money doing what I love without a crippling full-time job.
