Meet Andre Mattson | NBA Strength Coach, & Children’s Book Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andre Mattson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andre, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
The initial idea to write a children’s book was driven by purpose. I have very distinct memories of my Godparents reading various children’s books to me growing up. This was a very compassionate bonding time for me. It provoked an environment where we were all close together spending quality time, with no external distractions. As a society, we have shifted to more tech driven products that have created more separation from parents to children through independency. Children have began to spend more time staring at a screen and and less within the proximity to their parents. By writing a book that is a tangible object, this can encourage bringing back what we’ve lost and bring families closer together again. Time is our most valuable asset and if I can create an environment with more quality time, then I think I’m accomplishing my purposeful intention.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an entrepreneur at heart, but I do have a primary career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This was my initial passion that I spent my childhood, adolescence, and young career pursuing. As time has passed, my desire to have purpose driven ventures has grown. This could be driven by various instances of adversity, which include homelessness, losing loved ones, and losing a child. Adversity and pain is inevitable to everyone, but how we handle it teaches us and defines who we become. Fortunately, I never gave up and it has lead to great rewards. My intention is to show people that we can make it through anything with a relentless attitude.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is termed “America’s Finest City” and that is well-deserved. This city has a never-ending degree of variety that will keep anyone interested in staying. Lets start with places to go. My favorite spots to visit are Pacific Beach, Torrey Pines (The Glider Port & The Ho Chi Mihn Trail), Downtown (The Gaslamp District), and La Jolla Cove. I’m a huge fan of Mexican food and my top spots are anywhere in Old Town San Diego, and Cotijas Taco Shop! Outside of that, I’m a regular at Konos Cafe in Pacific Beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This book is dedicated to my Godparents, Sal and Nancy Cuenca. The memories and lessons from they have taught me through my life have a profound effect on who I am today. I am forever grateful for their selfless love they’ve given me.
