We had the good fortune of connecting with Ana Wilkinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ana, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Always be grateful. For all that I have there has been someone or something that has made it possible. I work hard to help others but I know that there have been people before me who have made all this possible. I am grateful for all that I have and for those that I can share it with. As much as I push to do more, I am forever appreciative and grateful for all I have.

As an Emergency Nurse at the core my job is to make people better. To do this, of course, we use medicine to help people. But I truly believe the real benefit is human touch and a smile. When people come into the hospital they don’t just come for just medicine, they come to get better physically and emotionally and that is what I take pride in. I see it as my job to take the time not only to listen to people problems but also to try and make a tough situation a little better through love, compassion, and caring. I always knew that I wanted to care for people. I started out perceiving an EMT/Paramedic on an ambulance and enjoyed going to people’s home or working on scene of emergencies to bring people into the hospital. Now I enjoy working with patients and families in the hospital as they recover. I don’t think this profession has ever been easy, but I love what I do . I have professional setbacks and I often have patients who’s stories bring me to tears but I love what I do and it doesn’t feel like work. I overcome these challenges through a strong support system. I have great friends, loving husband, and my children are my rock. The lessons that I have learned along the way is to take it one day at a time. When I look back at my accomplishments it wasn’t through any one action it was the constant persistence that made me successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorites spots in San Diego: We love the San Diego waterfront, especially with two little boys. We love to go down to Seaport Village and rent scooters. We head up the waterfront to the Maritime Museum or Midway Museum. Then have lunch or dinner at the Carnitas Shack, a little outdoor bar/restaurant at the foot of Broadway. We watch the boats sail by with a taco and a beer while the kids play in the dirt or play tic tac toe. Pop the evening off with an outdoor movie or a concert on the lawn across the street and its only in San Diego day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to take this time to thank the nurses and other essential workers that really stepped up to help me during such a tough time. It was really tough taking care of some very sick patients in the epicenter of the COVID crisis but I only did it with the help of those around me. From my nursing partners to my bus driver and my favorite restaurant, I was just a member of the team.
