Meet Amy Lewis & Kelli Schry | Podcast Co-hosts

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Lewis & Kelli Schry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy Lewis & Kelli Schry, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We started our podcast, Uncover Motherhood, as a way for us to stay in touch, but it is our hope that the stories we tell help other moms feel connected, feel seen and validated. Being a mom – while very rewarding – can be very isolating. We’ve found that many moms don’t have the support system they need. So, we use this platform to share our own personal journeys, struggles and successes. Between us our kids range from toddlers to teenagers, and we represent the working mom and the stay at home mom. We love to interview other moms on our podcast to share their unique journeys as well.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We started out working together, but then took very different paths when we each became mothers. Amy chose to be a stay at home mom, and Kelli became a working mom. But we realized that we each still struggle with “mom guilt” – when it comes to motherhood, there’s no easy or right answer. Our journeys all look different, but the one thing we all have in common is we’re just doing our best for our families. Which is why we love talking to other moms about how they’re balancing everything in their lives. We have so much we can learn from one another.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In San Diego we love going to the beach together with our kids to enjoy the beauty in our backyard. Over Easter Amy rented a beach house in Pacific Beach for the week to enjoy while her kitchen was under a demolition and remodel. And the summer this year we were at the beach a ton! Amy’s boys are in the junior lifeguard program and her oldest was an intern last summer with the program. Both families enjoyed bike rides and BBQ’s and playing football or smashball on the sand. The younger kids (Kelli and Amy’s girls who are besties, just like their moms) loved boogie boarding and playing in the sand, and the littlest of the bunch, Kelli’s son, LOVED being around Amy’s teenage boys while trying to keep up and eating all the snacks. At 4 years old, he thinks he’s just as big as the teenagers. We usually go to Pacific or Mission Beach or La Jolla Shores since the beach and bay are so accessible there and we both live in central San Diego.
We both enjoy coffee shops and walks, which is where we do our best brainstorming for podcast episodes. We have a long list of ones to try throughout Ocean Beach to La Jolla. Current enjoyable spots are Caroline’s Seaside Café at Scripps La Jolla, Superbloom at Mission Bay and Portside Coffee at the San Diego Harbor. We’ve been out with our husbands in Little Italy recently and have enjoyed Rovino, Ironside and Seneca Trattoria (which has a gorgeous view!). We also enjoy comedy shows and have been downtown to Balboa Theatre and the Comedy Club in La Jolla for double date nights.
And if this wasn’t obvious…we love drinking wine together! If we can sneak away for a day or two, we love to road trip to Temecula for wine tasting. It’s like going on a vacation but we don’t have to travel too far away. Our future itinerary has the Guadalupe Valley on it for wine tasting, San Luis Obispo for good food and wine, and Murrieta Hot Springs and Glen Ivy for a girls spa day!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The great thing about our partnership is that we’ve come full circle in our professional and personal relationship. Amy began her career working with the media in 1998 and in public relations in 2000, and Kelli began her career in PR in 2007 – which is when we began working together. Over the past 17 years, we’ve adapted and changed in many ways, both working hard on our careers and personal life; In 2011 Amy took a break from working to raise her children and support her husband’s career, and Kelli got married, had two children of her own, and worked full-time while juggling motherhood. But one thing never changed – we always supported each other and encouraged one another throughout our ever-evolving phases of life.
In 2007 Amy owned a boutique PR agency in La Mesa. She had a 6 month old baby and was in need of a summer intern to help support her business as she juggled her new role as a mom. Kelli just graduated from California State University, San Marcos, and was eager to learn as much about the Public Relations industry as possible. One month into Kelli’s internship, Amy realized Kelli was invaluable to her life – both personally and professionally – so she hired her on full time.
For several years we had the best time working together! We balanced each other perfectly in all aspects of our lives. In late 2009, it was time for us to go our separate directions – Kelli continued her PR career at another San Diego agency, and Amy made the choice to stay home with her young children. But we’ve stayed friends through it all. Careers…travelling…weddings…babies…raising children together. Even when we weren’t working directly together, we’ve been each other’s biggest cheerleader, mentor, therapist….always providing love and encouragement no matter what phase of life we’re in.
This is what we want to emphasize – we all need a village, and we want to connect with others who help to inspire us, support each other and not judge how we all navigate our personal and professional lives. We both have had other women inspire and uplift us throughout our career and motherhood journey so we aspire to be that type of woman to others.
