Meet Amy Huang | Multicultural Wedding and Branding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Huang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, how does your business help the community?
As a multicultural wedding and branding photographer, my goal is to showcase the beauty of difference within the wedding and portrait industry.
Specifically, in the wedding industry, I want people to understand, and see just how truly beautiful cultural wedding traditions can be – especially traditions that have roots as deep as 4000+ years. The wedding industry is so highly euro/western-centric that culture seems to be forced to hide in the shadows. The wedding industry advertisements don’t showcase the intricacies behind cultural traditions. I want to break through this ceiling, allowing the vast colors and complexities of cultural weddings to shine through.
In regard to branding portraits, I want to give a voice and a presence to the multicultural community – empowering the many entrepreneurs that are POC giving them a stronger presence and ability to be seen.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a luxury multicultural wedding photographer, I aim to showcase wedding traditions that are not normally highlighted. I would love for the world to see just how amazing these wedding traditions are!
My photos capture special moments and all those in between. And when you allow me the time and freedom, I can create showstopping moments that you’ll remember forever. If I were to put a phrase to my photographs it’d be boundlessly bonafide and empowering film-inspired photos that capture and speaks to the soul.
My passion for photography started before me – as my father was a photographer as well. I grew up analyzing the photos I took with my old-fashioned film 35mm camera. And when the digital world opened up to everyday consumers, I always had a camera in my hand. But I would have never called myself a professional until recently – even though I’ve been in the business for over 13 years. And the reason for this is that I never was able to create the work I loved until now. And now there is no turning back!
I want the world to see the beauty in multicultural weddings. I want people to love culture and differences as much as I do. There is so much we can learn from each other. And not only this, but we can do it together vs. separate – community over competition – kindness over malice and envy,

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego has some of the most gorgeous beaches and food. And if said visitor was truly my best friend, they must love sushi – which San Diego has some of the best!
So, between going to all the best restaurants in San Diego, we’d most likely:
1) take a hike up Mount Soledad
2) go visit Balboa Park
3) go visit La Jolla Tidepools area
4) get some great coffee and eat at Extraordinary Desserts
5) if they liked beer – go visit one of the breweries
5) or go to one of the major amusement parks in San Diego!
I’m all about good food and good conversations!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The wedding industry is hard enough already as it is. And many would agree to the fact that it can be rather lonely. But for me, if it wasn’t for Covid, I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to understand just how amazing the wedding industry could be. I wouldn’t have understood the need to extend myself – beyond my walls – allowing other creatives into my life – people who could spur me on and forward.
My growth began with Katelyn James’ photography community and, culminated in my investment in KT Merry’s The Abundance Plan. With KT Merry, I was introduced to other wedding creatives that are constantly pushing against the fold – people who desire to create an industry of trust, collaboration, cooperation, and most importantly kindness. KT gathered a group of creatives that desire to make a difference – not only in their own lives or clients’ lives but a lasting impact on those around us. She encourages creating a business that could outlive ourselves – making a difference far greater than ourselves.
I wish I could put into words the amount of growth I gained from joining her community. But, it could only be experienced instead of described. With KT’s community, I can honestly say that I have friends all over the world who – because of this community – would open their doors anytime – people who would go out of the way JUST TO MEET and CONNECT with another fellow TAP member. That’s how dear these people are to me!
It takes a community to raise a child they say. Well.. in truth, it takes a community to truly live, be guided, and be pushed to become our full potential.
