We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Bernard Bryant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amy, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my daughters who since the start of my career as a full-time ceramic artist, have always expressed their pride in me, however big or small my accomplishments have been. They inspire me daily by being positive and hard-working woman themselves. My art is a reflection of my pride and love for my family.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the world of pottery, where there are hundreds of talented artists, you really need to set yourself apart by following and listening to your own voice. Ceramics is an art form that has been worked and reworked over time by many different hands, so while it is incredibly challenging, its also very important to create a distinct style that’s reflected in your body of work. My goal is to make a statement and also be recognized for my individuality.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from San Diego but have lived in Los Angeles the past 7 years, so I’ll share my what a day visit in both cities would look like..

A day in San Diego would start with a coffee and pastry from Extraordinary Desserts, a long walk through Balboa Park, a visit to The Mingei, lunch at Alladines in Hillcrest for some Lebanese food, and then to La Jolla to watch the sunset.

A day in Los Angeles would start with breakfast at Huckleberry’s in Santa Monica, the Getty Museum for the afternoon, and then dinner at Pace’s after the sunset at the top of Griffith Observatory.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to all the woman in my life that have encouraged me since I was young girl in ceramics class in high school, and for the last 40 years! Starting with the most gracious woman, my mother who really insisted her daughters pursue their passions and talents in the arts.

Today and for the last several decades, thanks to the love and encouragement of my daughters, I am pursuing a full-time career in ceramics. My success comes in the form of their admiration, and of course from my clay community always lifting me up.
