We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Duvall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was selling something for another company with the with the guise of you thinking it’s “your business” but it really wasn’t.
I wanted to be my own boss, not have monthly quotas that will define what money you’ll make, and to work more with the pace that would work best for my family.
I saw a macramé piece online somewhere and immediately knew that that’s what I wanted to do.
I did a lot of homework as to what fiber I should use, what products I wanted to make, etc.
I found another small business, Ganxxet, that makes both high end and affordable fibers. Their products are such a great quality that I decided to exclusively use Ganxxet for all my fiber needs.
Once I found my materials, I took off!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a hairstylist, and I specialize in a few things, one of them being braiding.
Because of that, macramé came naturally for me! I started out making baby products (pacifier clips, teethers, etc) and then quickly added in earrings. I started making wall hangings and plant hangers a little less than a year ago. I had this mental block about it. I don’t know why. I was definitely intimidated, but once I started, I loved it. I now make all kinds of macramé wall hangings.
I get inspiration from nature, other artists, from my past work, and I especially try to put something in each piece that I have never seen before. They’re all so unique and fun to make.
I think it’s the attention to detail that really makes my work stand out.
Even a few years ago, I would have never guessed that I would be making high end home decor for peoples homes and businesses. It’s amazing what can happen if you have faith in yourself and just start somewhere.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Glendale, CA. It’s a melting pot of culture, creation, and yummy food! I would order Cafe Bravo for dinner, and walk off the meal the next morning with a nice foggy hike in Griffith park. We would then go to Porto’s for lunch and then head to the beach.
We would enjoy an afternoon at the beach and then find a taco truck to get our grub on for dinner.
We would turn in as early as possible because day two is a Disney day!!! We are huge Disney fans! I have 4 daughters and we do Disneyland every Thursday (or at least 2-4 Thursday’s a month).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ganxxet for supplying high end, affordable, and high quality fibers.
My family, friends, husband, and kids who supported my dream.
