We had the good fortune of connecting with Aly Vredenburgh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aly, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I believe that art has the power to create joy, and I want to dedicate my life to making others happy. Making other people happy is what motivates me to keep pursuing art. Having the ability to capture an image to paper whether it’s with oil paint or with charcoal, is something I’ve worked hard to develop into a skill that I can utilize and celebrate.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Breaking into the art world is very difficult. Not everyone likes my style, and it takes growing inner confidence and being willing to accept rejection to grow further as an artist. I am naturally shy so putting myself out there has been a challenge, so I’ve offered many of my works for charities and for free almost on a monthly basis in order to get my name out there. Instead of letting the challenges set me back, I see them as motivation—the higher the risk the greater the reward!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego has so many great places to visit. Because we’re right next to the border of Tijuana, you can find some of the best Mexican food in the world here. My favorite thing to do on the weekend is grabbing a coffee at Better Buzz Coffee Roasters in Pacific Beach and walking along the beach to the boardwalk. There’s also fantastic hiking trails, such as Annie’s canyon trail, that are a fun way to stay active. If you want seafood I highly recommend Fish house Vera Cruz in San Marcos. If you want fun ambiance go to Yellow Deli in Vista.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I believe the University of San Diego maintains a supportive environment that helps foster creativity. I had several professors that encouraged me to pursue my passions, which made a significant impact on my life. Because of their kind words, I felt confident to reach for goals that I want to achieve.
