We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Levine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business came from a deep need to create a space where moms—especially millennial moms—could finally get the support they deserve. As a mom myself, I understand how easy it is to lose yourself in the chaos of pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting. There’s so much pressure to be perfect, to juggle everything, and to somehow enjoy every moment. But the truth is, motherhood is messy, exhausting, and sometimes downright overwhelming. I wanted to build a practice that acknowledges the real struggles of modern moms and provides a judgment-free space for them to prioritize their own well-being. My goal was to create therapy that fits into the busy lives of moms—flexible, accessible, and focused on real self-care, not just checking boxes. Through my business, I’m able to help moms navigate postpartum anxiety, mom burnout, and relationship struggles, all while reclaiming their identity and learning to thrive—not just survive. It’s about offering real support for real moms, in a way that feels authentic and achievable.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My therapy practice, Therapy for California Moms, is all about providing real support for women in the trenches of pregnancy, postpartum and parenting young kids. I focus on supporting millennial moms as they navigate the challenges of pregnancy, postpartum, and early motherhood—things like postpartum depression, anxiety, burnout, and relationship struggles. What sets me apart is that I create a space where moms don’t have to pretend to have it all together. It’s a place where we talk about the raw, messy truths of motherhood, not just the curated social media version of it.

I’m most excited about creating a judgment-free zone for moms to prioritize their mental health and self-care without feeling guilty. I’m proud of how my business has evolved into a supportive community where moms feel heard, understood, and empowered to take care of themselves. It’s been incredible to see the transformations that happen when moms start to embrace their own needs and reclaim their identity.

The journey to where I am today definitely wasn’t easy. Building this business meant taking risks, facing self-doubt, and learning to trust my expertise as a therapist and my gut instincts as a mom. There were many challenges—finding the right work-life balance, navigating the tech side of running a virtual business, and building a client base from the ground up. But I overcame those hurdles by staying committed to my why: supporting moms in the real, authentic way they deserve. I leaned into the support of mentors, trusted friends, and a community of moms who believed in my mission.

Along the way, I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help, you don’t have to have it all figured out from the start, and failure doesn’t mean giving up—it’s just part of the process. What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I’m here for the messy, imperfect parts of motherhood. I believe that self-care is non-negotiable for moms, and I’m committed to helping moms feel like themselves again—without the guilt, shame, or overwhelm that often comes with being a mom. This is a journey, and it’s one I’m honored to be on with every mom who walks through my virtual door.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Breakfast: The Cottage in La Jolla is a cozy spot for an amazing breakfast with a California twist—think lemon ricotta pancakes and avocado toast.

Morning: After breakfast, we’d spend the morning exploring La Jolla Cove. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego, perfect for a stroll, spotting sea lions, or even a little kayaking.

Lunch: We’d grab lunch at George’s at the Cove—an iconic spot with a fantastic ocean view and awesome seafood.

Afternoon: In the afternoon, we’d hit up Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve for a hike. It’s a great way to take in the stunning coastal cliffs and get a little adventure in.

Dinner: For a chill, fun night, we’d eat at Cucina Urbana—a great spot in Bankers Hill with a relaxed vibe and fantastic Italian dishes.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, especially my partner and my community. They’ve been my rock through every step of building this business, and I honestly couldn’t have done it without them. I also want to give a huge shoutout to the incredible community of moms I work with. Their trust, vulnerability, and resilience continue to inspire me every single day. In addition, I’m beyond grateful for the mentors and colleagues in the therapy field who have guided me, shared their wisdom, and helped me find my own voice as a therapist for moms. And lastly, I can’t forget the books and resources that have shaped my approach—The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown and Mothering from the Inside Out by Daniel J. Siegel are just a couple that have really resonated with me. Their support, encouragement, and shared knowledge has helped me get to where I am, and I’m so thankful for all of it!
