We had the good fortune of connecting with Aidan & Nuri Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aidan & Nuri, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Our story is a bit complicated and is indicative of when two Worlds collide. I, Nuri, was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. I worked for 13 years in a Health and Beauty Company out of Malaysia. While working for this company, I realized that to achieve my dream of having a family with my new American husband, who is a professional musician, we would need to start our own business. This was about 6 years ago.

At this time, although married, I was living in Jakarta and my husband was traveling back and forth from the US while I was going through the immigration process. Our business specializes in selling Indonesian clothing which includes Batik, the Indonesian National fabric, as well as other unique and beautiful fabrics from my home country. We also sell jewelry and accessories. Our business spread very quickly. Prior to Covid-19 we had locations in Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya, which consisted of 13 outlets and 7 popup locations in malls. We scaled back to weather the pandemic, but continue to do well with 4 outlets and 4 popups in Indonesia. We currently rank on the Zalara platform, which is similar to Amazon in South Asia, in the top 10 of highest online sellers in Indonesia. We are going back in January to reorganize our business there, and we will continue to operate here in the US.

When I arrived in the US I recognized that my Indonesian business model would fit in well with the CA culture. We started our US business in January 2021, in Famers’ Markets all around San Diego County. We grew quickly and have enjoyed the success of achieving our goals on two sides of the World.

Owning our own businesses, has provided us with the flexibility that we need to operate in two Countries, and raise our two children that we were blessed with during this period.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Our products come from Indonesia and I use Indonesian artisans from various cities and villages throughout my home Country. I am very proud of the fact that I know my vendors, and our partnership helps to provide them with the ability to support their families.

We are also proud of the fact that our businesses grew so quickly. It wasn’t magic, we did have to work very hard to make this happen, but it was worth it. The pandemic presented some unique challenges, such as malls shutting down in Indonesia which prevented us from getting to our inventory. With each challenge we engaged in creative thinking so that we could overcome each obstacle. A constant focus on our long-term goals helped us to get past any challenges that came our way.

The most valuable lesson we have learned along the way is that persistence pays off.

We would want the World to know that merging our two cultures has been so incredibly satisfying. We have been able to share our love for my Indonesian heritage, as well as provide friends and family with the ability to earn a good living. Regardless of what side of the world you are on, it really is all about family and friends.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Indonesia: If you visit us here, we would love to take you to:
*The malls! You have not visited a mall until you have visited an Asian mall!
*Bali. We would absolutely visit Ubud. We would see The Sea Temples , The Rice Patties, The Monkey Forest and eat and drink at the Laughing Buddha, and The Crispy Duck.
*Yogjakarta where we would visit the home of the Javanese King, as well as see one of the 7 wonders of the world, Borobudur.

San Diego:
If you visit us here, we would take you to see:
*Our beautiful beaches, the Midway, and other San Diego hotspots.
*Los Angeles to visit Hollywood, and surrounding areas.
*Big Bear to explore a robust mountain community
*Catalina to experience island life.
*There are too many restaurants to mention but we would wine and dine them for sure!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thank you to our support group which includes numerous family members and friends. Without your constant support and encouragement we would not have been able to achieve our dreams to this degree.
