We had the good fortune of connecting with Adya Roy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adya, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born into a highly educated and very STEM-driven family. For me to pursue engineering was actually the assumed normal path. But I wanted to do something different, something that set me apart from the other engineers in my family. That’s one of the reasons I started creating content, as my unique selling point, and my own individual definition of success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an engineer and content creator who creates career content and about balancing both the lifestyles, I find myself in a unique situation in that I cannot aspire to be a fulltime creator. I would lose about half of my content if I gave up one of my main content pillars as The Desi Career Woman. Among recent accomplishments, I am very proud of my PMP (Project Management Professional) certification that I achieved this year. I am about 15 years younger than the average PMP holder, and of the other gender, and that is not even considering my status as a first-generation immigrant and a Woman of Color.
It has definitely not been easy getting to where I am today. Last year, in 2022, I faced 2 layoffs within a matter of 6 months, and it just about shattered me as a human being and whatever self confidence I had remaining. What I would want people to see is a re-constructed woman, a new sense of self-confidence and a brand new personality that is ready to take on the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think itineraries should really depend on the friend! For drinks, I am a huge sucker for Jalapeno magaritas, ones that a much spicier than sweet. The secret is to use Jalapeno infused Tequila in addition to the jalapeno juice. As an influencer, I would definitely love to hit some new spots I discover on Tiktok, which is where I do most of my itinerary planning. I am also a big fan of fun activities; axe throwing being one of my favorites!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people and groups that should be named, but I like to reserve these moments to be private. Everybody who has contributed to my success and supported my endeavors; you know who you are, you know what you mean to me, and you know I’d be nothing without you.
