We had the good fortune of connecting with Lan Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lan, what are you most proud of in terms of your business?
With what I have done, I’m proud I was able to find a way and build a lane coming from a city where what I do isn’t a hot commodity as well as something you dont see coming out of San Diego everyday.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is motion picture. Film, video, etc. I think what sets me apart is the way I came to where I am today. Getting into the entertainment business isnt easy and there is no perfect way in. I got my way in through the music video world without any hand out. Since there was no one from San Diego to look up to and follow their blue print, I had to figure my own way. I treated myself as if I was a hungry underground rapper and jumped on everything before things struck hot. One thing led to another and it led me to being in camps from a little more known hip hop artists. It wasn’t easy mainly because we dont live in an entertainment business but it wasnt hard to start reaching out towards the closest entertainment city like LA. I’ve learned to stay persistent and constantly make content that will keep your name in people’s ear. The only thing I want the world to know about me and my story is that it is not something overnight, it took a while especially having to carry my own weight to learn the business but I learned to figure things out and it only gave me more knowledge along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The three places for food that I always would take someone from out of town into the city would always be taco shop first. Let them know our staple of our local mexican food. Second would be wings n things, which is a chain that has only been in our region and lastly is Canada steak burgers off University Ave in City Heights. That is a neighborhood food spot I cherished as a kid growing up. Places to visit would always be the beach anywhere between Ocean Beach all the way up to Pacific Beach. Of course you got to take them downtown to see that we have probably one of the most entertaining downtown cities in America in the Gaslamp. Theres times, friends want to see “the hood”, so I’ll take them around to a few spots so they get a glimpse that we dont have a pretty side but the one thing about all of our inner city areas is that its is the most culture youll experience in the city. And if they feel a little adventurous, theres possiblity we would go across the border.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out to everyone back home in San Diego that really saw what I was trying to do and believe in what I was doing even though sometimes they didnt see the vision, they knew I saw it. I also want to shout out the more notable artists that gave me a shot and let me create a visual for their art for the world to see and putting the trust in me to make it happen.
