We had the good fortune of connecting with Kym De Los Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kym, what’s your startup story? How did you start your business?
I have drawn and painted my whole life and I knew that no matter where I was in life I knew art was always going to be waiting for me. When I turned 43 something a huge nudge push me I to painting full time. I just had a whisper in my ear that now was the time to dive in. I carved out a space, got on social media, painted everyday and grew. I hustled in contracts, submissions, networking and things started to build after about 2 years of hard work EVERYDAY. I am relentless. I am the creative, I design, I paint, I am a beginning carpenter, I market, pack and ship, handle correspondences, maintain some of my website design, control finances, maintain supplies and materials, I am the studio janitor and a owner of Kym De Los Reyes-ART I wouldn’t have it any other way.!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Kym De Los Reyes-ART takes a representational idea and abstracts the form, color and rendering to give the subject a voice…my voice. I dabble in various genres and subject matters, but I always come back to the landscape. Time and time again, I am so inspired by the geography around me or a scape of where I have been. I focus on collections of work and a centralized theme with in the collection. I think you find a looseness in style and sophisticated, surprising color choices, that set me apart. I know it has taken years of trials and honing my craft, that has helped my zero in on what I want to be know for. Any success in any art form, takes years and years of work. The process of establishing yourself as a working professional is a marathon, not a sprint, immediate success just doesn’t happen. I have found that the artist with passion, endurance, tenacity and work ethic will find a way, not because they want to, but because they HAVE to. I want people to know that being created to create is a hard but rewarding life. My art is an extension of me. not just a job.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live near the Temecula wine Country, this region offers so many opportunities for inspiration. I love to take my friends to the many wineries out here for a relaxing spa day, wine tasting or fantastic brunch. My city offers great hiking trails and beautiful outdoor activities that i use frequently. I am an hour drive to the coast, the beach is always calling my name.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t do what I do with out my husband and kid’s encouragement and never ending support! My people have my back in good, bad, up or down. They lift me up. My faith is the biggest part of my life. My Glory goes to God. My Photographer and website designer, Kellsey Schwab at The Woonden Anchor has been instrumental in my start up. She’s such a generous artist herself!
