Meet Matthew McGloin | Actor/Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew McGloin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s been my dream and professional goal to be an actor since I was about 10 years old. It wasn’t until around my second year of college while I was earning my BFA in Theatre that I started to think of this pursuit as ‘starting my own business’, but it’s an apt description of the path. Since then, most of my life choices have been in service to that goal. Taking my dreams and desires seriously is part & parcel of show business; so at the core of starting my own business was my personal vision of life as an artist, a performer, a storyteller. Basically, my vocation and my business are one and the same.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love being an actor. I am a hybrid of actor & musician, while I also have facility with comedy and emotional vulnerability. I’d say that I’m most proud of being a true New Yorker (now that I’ve lived there for more than the requisite 10 years), of being a working actor (in a profession in which being employed puts you in the minority among your colleagues), and of having good friends. I got to where I am today by being adaptive and persistent, and- as cliche as it sounds- by just not giving up. I’ve pounded the pavement going to open call auditions, attended classes and industry meetings, participated in workshops, networked at parties and shows, etc. It all counts, any and every action I take to engage with the industry and with my own artistry. Most important for me has been cultivating a sense of faith and grit, because one can easily find any number of reasons to give up if you’re ‘not where you thought you’d be’ at a certain point in your life. I’m still learning and practicing how to be both my own nurturer and my own coach, every day; I believe it’s a balance.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t actually know SoCal all that well as I’ve only been here for five weeks, and most of that time I’ve been working. With that said, I’d show a friend around by checking off a few boxes: beach, hike, restaurant. I had a great time at the Grass Skirt. I really enjoyed a hike in the Elfin Forest. And the beaches here are beautiful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to my parents, Dareen and Frank McGloin. They have been a source of constant love and support throughout my life, and I’m grateful to call them my parents and my friends.
