Meet Ellyn Lerner | Founder of Santa Monica Kids, a resource for fun things to do with kids in Santa Monica and SoCal.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellyn Lerner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellyn, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from Ukraine, but my family immigrated to Chicago, IL when I was three years old. Growing up in a different country definitely had an impact on my upbringing and who I am today. For one, I was exposed to different cultures and customs at a young age, which I think has really helped me to be open-minded and accepting of others. I want to instill those same values to my children.
Then, 3 years ago my husband and I moved to Los Angeles. I feel like Los Angeles is also very diverse and I can expose my children to different backgrounds and beliefs. Additionally, my parents instilled in me the importance of hard work and determination, which has definitely shaped my work ethic and determination to succeed.
Looking back, I am grateful for the journey that brought me to where I am today. It has not always been easy, but it has made me the person I am today – a proud immigrant with a rich cultural background and a bright future ahead for my family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a mom living in Santa Monica, I was always on the lookout for fun and engaging activities to do with my 22 month old son and 5 year old daughter. But with so many options available, it was often overwhelming to try and find something that was both age-appropriate and enjoyable for all of us.
That’s when I decided to start my own Instagram page, called Santa Monica Kids. It’s dedicated to reviewing and sharing my favorite kid-friendly spots around town. It started as a way for me to connect with other parents in the community and find new places to take my little ones, but it quickly turned into something much bigger.
Through my Instagram page, I’ve been able to discover hidden gems in Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area that I never would have found on my own. From indoor play spaces and parks, to art studios and educational programs, there’s always something new and exciting to explore.
But more than just a source of information, my page has become a place for parents to connect and share their own experiences and recommendations. It’s been so rewarding to see the community come together and support each other in finding fun and meaningful ways to spend time with our kids.
In the end, starting my Instagram page has been a journey of self-discovery and community-building. It’s allowed me to tap into my creative side and share my love of parenting with others, all while building a stronger connection with the place I call home.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you’re looking for fun things to do with your kids as a family in Santa Monica and Los Angeles, you’re in luck! This vibrant and diverse city has so much to offer families with children of all ages. From educational activities and cultural experiences to thrilling amusement parks and beautiful beaches, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Here are some of my top picks for the best things to do with kids in Santa Monica and Los Angeles:
1. Visit the Santa Monica Pier: This iconic landmark is a must-see for families visiting the area. Kids will love the carnival rides, arcades, and street performers, while adults can enjoy the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
2. Head to the beach: Santa Monica and Los Angeles are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Spend the day building sandcastles, surfing, or just soaking up the sun.
3. Check out the California Science Center. Located in downtown Los Angeles, the California Science Center is a hands-on, interactive museum that is perfect for curious minds. From the interactive exhibits in the Ecosystems Gallery to the IMAX theater and Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit, there is so much to see and do at the California Science Center. Plus, admission is free, making it a budget-friendly activity for families. So if you’re looking for a fun and educational outing, be sure to add the California Science Center to your list of things to do with your kids in Santa Monica and Los Angeles.
So whether you’re looking for educational experiences or thrilling adventures, Santa Monica and Los Angeles have something for every family to enjoy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to my Mom’s Group that I met through Facebook. When I first moved to Santa Monica and my son was a few months old, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and was looking for a support system with other moms. But thanks to the guidance and encouragement of these amazing women, I have gained so much confidence and feel much more equipped to handle the challenges of parenting. I bounce ideas off them and they encourage me to try new places and activities with my kids. We still meet to this day and I am thankful to the bonds our kids have together.
